SURPRISE, Ariz. - Oklahoma State shortstop Chris Gutierrez broke an 0-for-7 slump with a two-run single in the top of the eighth inning to help lead the Cowboys to a 3-1 victory over Gonzaga in the third day of the Coca-Cola Spring Training College Baseball Classic at Surprise Stadium.

The Cowboys (2-3) broke the 0-0 tie in the eighth inning on a run-scoring groundout from first baseman John Urick. Gutierrez then added a two-run single with the bases loaded to stake the Cowboys to a 3-0 lead. OSU posted potential scoring threats in the first and second innings with three runners reaching third base, but could not put a run on the board.

OSU reliever Cody King picked up the win with two and one-third scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Junior Daniel Rew picked up the save by recording the last three outs of the game after inheriting the bases loaded. Starter Jimmy Rhodes recorded the no-decision despite pitching well in four and two-thirds scoreless innings.

Gonzaga (0-3) starter Eric Dworkis was solid in his first start of the year to pick up the no-decision. Dworkis, a 6-5 freshman from Bellevue, Wash., scattered five hits and recorded four strikeouts in six scoreless innings. Freshman reliever Josh Monroe took the loss for the Zags, giving up three hits and three runs in an inning and two-thirds.

Oklahoma State third baseman Josh Fields led the Cowboys with three hits in the game, while Phoenix native Jose Virgil added two hits (2x5).

The Bulldogs were limited to seven hits by the four OSU pitchers. Designated hitter Kemp Quackenbush led the way for the Zags with a 2-for-4 performance, while senior second baseman Eric Rodland capped a solid tournament with a 1-for-2 game, two walks and a sacrifice fly to score Gonzaga's only run.

Gonzaga will stay in the Valley of the Sun for a single game Monday at Packard Stadium (7 p.m.) against No. 5 Arizona State. ASU defeated Gonzaga 8-4 during the first day of the tournament at Surprise Stadium.
