TEMPE, Ariz. -- The 12th-ranked Arizona State baseball team swept yesterday's doubleheader and the weekend series with Hawaii-Hilo (3-8) to remain undefeated (8-0) on the season.
In the first game, Arizona State defeated the Vulcans 14-3. The game in Kona was shortened to six innings due to the 10-run rule.
Senior Chuck Crumpton (2-0) pitched four innings for the Devils, picking up his second win of the season. Crumpton gave up three earned runs on four hits, four strikeouts and three walks.
Arizona State broke the game open in the fifth inning, scoring eight runs. First baseman Mitch Jones led the Devils' offense with a 2-for-3 outing. Jones knocked in a run and scored two. Sophomore Kevin Tillman was also a factor, going 1-for-1 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Freshman Joe Bell started the game for the Vulcans and picked up the loss, falling to 0-1. In four-plus innings, Bell surrendered six runs on six hits, and had no strikeouts. Bell walked seven, while the Hawaii-Hilo pitching staff gave up a total of twelve walks on the day.
Offensively for Hawaii-Hilo, leftfielder Shaye Miura went 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Designated hitter Paul Yap pitched in with a 1-for-2 performance and one RBI.
The Sun Devils shut out the Vulcans 10-0 in the final game of the series at Simmons Field in Kona.
Sophomore lefthander Drew Friedberg (1-0) got the win for the Devils, pitching a one-hit shutout. Friedberg went the distance for the Devils, picking up the first complete game of his career. He also recorded his first career shutout and struck out a career-high seven batters in the impressive performance.
Jones contributed some offense in the second game as well, going 1-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Catcher Ty Johnson went 1-for-3, knocking in three and scoring once. Shortstop Willie Bloomquist had a 2-for-4 outing with a run scored.
For the Vulcans, Freshman Fausto Allosada (0-1) picked up the loss, giving up five runs, none of them earned, on four hits. Allosada struck out eight and walked four.
With the sweep of this series, Arizona State remains undefeated in the all-time series with Hawaii-Hilo, improving to 11-0.
The Sun Devils return home this weekend to take on Howard University in a three-game series. The series begins with a 7:00 game on Friday, January 29 at Packard Stadium.
