TEMPE, Ariz. - UNLV first baseman Chris Bonnell hit a two-out, two-run double in the top of the ninth inning to overcome a 3-0 deficit and lead the Rebels to a thrilling 5-3 come-from-behind 5-3 win over East Carolina in an elimination game of the 2005 NCAA Baseball Tempe Regional Saturday afternoon at Packard Stadium.

East Carolina third baseman Mark Minicozzi hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning to unlock a 0-0 pitcher's dual and starting pitcher Ricky Brooks cruised through the first eight innings without allowing a run before UNLV's improbable comeback in the ninth.

The Rebels kept their season alive to improve to 35-28 and will face the loser of the Coastal Carolina-Arizona State game that will be played Saturday evening. East Carolina had its season come to an end with an overall 35-26 record. UNLV will be the home team for Sunday's first game after playing as the visitors in the first two games.

Trailing 3-0 with one out in the ninth, left fielder Matt Fry started the rally with a double to right-center to chase Brooks from the game. Reliever Mike Fly came in to walk the only two batters he faced to load the bases. Third baseman Mike Cruz cut the lead to one with a two-run single through the left side of the infield. After a strikeout by shortstop Zeke Parraz, Bonnell drilled a double down the right field line to score a pair of runs and give the Rebels their first lead of the game. Outfielder Ryan Bird followed with a single to left field to plate Bonnell with an insurance run.

UNLV closer Kyle Tabeek scattered three hits and gave up one run over the final three innings to earn the win. He struck out three and did not walk a batter to improve to 5-1 on the season. Senior starter Derek Rodriguez, a transfer from the University of Arizona, gave up four hits and two runs in six innings to record the no-decision.

ECU reliever Brett Braxton gave up two runs on three hits in one-third of an inning to suffer the loss and fall to 1-2 on the season. Brooks suffered the tough-luck no-decision giving up five hits and one run in 8.1 innings.

Minicozzi's home run finally put a run on the board off Rodriguez. Rodriguez had allowed only two hits through the first six innings before the leadoff home run in the seventh broke up the scoreless tie. ECU also added a run on a single up the middle by left fielder Drew Costanzo and another tally in the bottom of the eighth.

The Rebels out-hit the Pirates 8-7 and were led by the two hits and two RBI from Bonnell. Fry also went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Minicozzi and Costanzo each had two hits for the Pirates.
