SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Barry Bonds tied Mike Schmidt for eighth place on the career list with his 548th home run Saturday, a shot over the right-field fence at Pacific Bell Park that bounced into the bay.
It was Bonds' 54th home run of the season, coming in the San Francisco Giants' 123rd game - the fastest pace in history. He surpassed Sammy Sosa, who hit 54 home runs in 129 games for the Chicago Cubs in 1999.
The eighth-inning solo blast came off Atlanta Braves starter Jason Marquis. Bonds also singled off Marquis in the third inning, to match Orlando Cepeda on the franchise hits list with 1,286.
Bonds hit a pair of homers against the Florida Marlins on Thursday to surpass godfather Willie Mays single-season franchise record of 52 homers hit in 1965.
