Coastal Carolina Quotes

Coastal Carolina Head Coach Gary Gilmore
"That was probably the most hits I can remember ever giving up and still winning the game. We were very, very fortunate to put a couple of big innings together and we were able to distance ourselves a little bit. A bunch of guys stepped up today. Aaron (Verrett) got us going with that home run and Jon (Foisy) did a great job. We were very fortunate."

On the play of Aaron Verrett:
"Aaron (Verrett) has done a great job for us lately. He did a great job in the conference tournament and did a great job out there tonight. It was like a boxing match out there. We thought we had put them away a couple of times and we just kept letting them whittle their way back into it. Aaron did a great job. We have a couple guys who are just swinging the bat really well right now."

On the importance of winning Game 1:
"We've had our chances and we finally got it done. This was big for us. You can feel the whole crew out there pressing a little bit. They know that we have had opportunities and haven't been able to bring it home in the first game. The first game is obviously the biggest one because it guarantees you will be here on Sunday. Hopefully, we can just relax tomorrow and play baseball. We have to pitch a little better and we had a couple of unforced errors that had to do with getting used to the infield."

Coastal Carolina junior SS Aaron Verrett
On his offensive output in the game:
"I guess I just like fastballs a lot. I can get it up in the air. The fastball was up in the zone on the home run. In my other at-bat, (UNLV starting pitcher Matt Luca) tried to get me with a curveball and just left it over the plate."

Coastal Carolina junior RHP Ricky Shefka
On UNLV's second inning:
"I don't know what happened there. I started throwing fastballs and I left one up in the zone. He hit it out of the park and then I hit three guys after that. I needed to make an adjustment. The ball was just going wild and I needed to settle down. I just concentrated on throwing strikes and getting out of the inning."

Coastal Carolina junior INF Michael DeJesus
On getting production from the lower half of the order:
"It's good to see that other guys in the order are picking us up when we are not hitting. We didn't hit well today but Aaron (Verrett) came out and John (Foisy) and did the job well for us."

UNLV Quotes

UNLV Head Coach Buddy Gouldsmith:
On allowing seven runs in the fifth inning:
"I think Matt (Luca) got a couple balls up there, but to their credit they put the ball in play and they had a lot of balls fall. I thought a couple of those balls had eyes and you make an error and walk a couple and that's what leads to a big inning. Those are the things we were trying to stay out of. Start by pitching the ball down in the zone, second by playing defense and trying to minimize the freebies that we give them."

On timely hitting:
"Take a look at the last time a team got 18 hits in the opening game of a regional and lost. The timely hitting for us wasn't what we would have wanted it to of been. These guys set the table on numerous occasions and we let him off the hook early when we had a chance to really jump out there."

On the game:
"We did our job with the exception of the seven run inning. We did what we wanted to do. We won three or four innings and our philosophy is to go out there and try to win every inning. We did a good job of scoring in five or six innings and we had opportunities to score in every inning with the exception of one. I thought our guys did a great job of minimizing the middle of their order."

UNLV Senior Infielder Zeke Parraz:
On the team's mindset after losing the first game:
"I just think that we've got to keep the bats going. The way this field is and the way these teams are in this regional people are going to be able to swing it and we've got to be able to swing it with them. We've got to give as many runs to our pitchers as we can."

UNLV Sophomore Infielder Chris Bonnell:
On the team's mindset after losing the first game:
"We've done nothing the easy way the whole year. We've battled back from a 3-14 start and we finished 31-14 so we've done nothing the easy way. We'd rather not be in these situations, but we've got to make the best of it and battle through it. Battle through adversity has kind of been our motto throughout the whole year."

UNLV Junior Pitcher Matt Luca:
On the bottom of Coastal Carolina's order:
"We didn't get the seven, eight and nine guys out. The hitters definitely came out and did what they had to do."
