Tempe, Ariz. - Outfielder Ryan Sontag, has been named Student-Athlete of the Month, the Office of Student-Athlete Development announced Thursday. Sontag, a senior kinesiology major, has a 3.74 GPA and is set to graduate in four years.

He began his college career by winning Big 10 Freshman of the Year and earning second-team all-conference honors in his one year at Michigan State. He then transferred to ASU and earned a 4.0 GPA during the Fall 2005 semester, his first as a Sun Devil. He has also been a Maroon and Gold Scholar every semester since he has been at ASU.

Last year, Sontag earned first-team Academic All-Pac-10 honors while hitting .345 in 50 games to help the baseball team to a Pac-10 championship and a spot in the College World Series.

In addition, he has participated in PTM Programs for Youth, a non-profit organization dedicated to building communities and leadership skills through baseball, with the Sandlot All-Stars for three years.

"Ryan has set the standard for the exemplary student-athlete," ASU kinesiology lecturer Tannah Broman said. "He should be admired for his ability to perform so well in the classroom while maintaining his dedication to his sport. I've been lucky to have him as a student more than once."
