TEMPE, Ariz. -- Collegiate Baseball Newspaper has named Arizona State as having the eighth best recruiting class in the nation. The annual survey rates the recruiting classes based on the quality of freshmen, junior college transfers and other transfers.

Head Coach Pat Murphy and assistants Jay Sferra (7th year) and Mike Rooney (4th year) lured 16 of the nation? top baseball players to attend Arizona State this fall and bid for a spot on the 2002 roster.

The list includes an abundance of local all-state high school talent, including catcher Joel Bocchi (Desert Vista), C/INF Tuffy Gosewisch (Horizon), INF Nick Cadena (Apollo), Matt Leaf (Sunrise Mountain), RHP Josh Smith (Lake Havasu) and INF Jeff Larish (McClintock). Other top high school products joining ASU in 2002 is slick-fielding Dustin Pedroia (Woodland, Calif.) and multi-talented infielder Bret Berglund (Littleton, Colo.).

Junior college transfers Carlos Arguello (Cochise CC), Robbie McClellan (Seward County CC), Josh Perrault (South Mountain CC), Mike Guerrero (South Mountain CC), 1B Bo Bonesio (Navarro CC), John Hoyos (East LA CC) and Andre Ethier (Chandler-Gilbert CC) have also joined the ASU baseball program. Outfielder Eric OBrien moves over from Kent State University where he belted 18 home in 2001.

?t is a very exciting group of talented young players,?said Murphy, whose recruiting classes are a mainstay amongst the top 10 in the country.

ASU returns six of its top position players and seven of its top pitchers from last year's squad that finished with a 37-20-1 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the last five years. Pac-10 schools USC (1st) and Stanford (5th) were also ranked in Collegiate Baseball? top 10.
