Wrestling Opens 1999 Pac-10 Season with Win and Tie

TEMPE, Ariz. - The eighth-ranked Arizona State wrestling team (7-5-1, 1-0-1) opened their Pac-10 season today with a 27-14 win over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and an 18-18 tie with 13th-ranked Cal State Bakersfield. The Devils are now 1-0-1 overall in the Pac-10 this season.

In the first match with the 13th-ranked Roadrunners, ASU received wins from Arturo Anaya (133), Mark Perryman (141), 16th-ranked Quinn Foster (149), 12th-ranked Steve Blackford (165) and fifth-ranked Casey Strand (184). Blackford recorded a 7-2 decision over CSUB's Andy Varner, who was ranked 11th in the nation. Strand's 7-3 decision came over CSUB's 14th-ranked Lionel Halsey. Sophomore Quinn Foster recorded his seventh win by fall against Cal State Bakersfield, pinning Elizar Ceballos at the 1:05 mark. Seventeenth-ranked Moses Delfin from CSUB recorded an upset over ASU's seventh-ranked Matt Azevedo at 125, which gave CSUB enough points to tie the Devils.

In ASU's match against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, the Sun Devils recorded six wins in the 10 bouts to give them the 27-14 win over the Mustangs. The Sun Devils were led by sophomore Steve Blackford, who recorded his ninth win by fall this season, pinning Ismail Abdullah at 4:51. Blackford now has a 10-3 record in duals this season. Also helping ASU was junior Arturo Anaya who scored seven points in the last minute at his weight to give him the 12-9 decision over Alberto Garza. Anaya was 2-0 today. Other Devils recording wins were seventh-ranked Matt Azevedo, 6-5 in duals (125) and Mark Perryman, 4-2 in duals (141). Senior Casey Strand and sophomore Quinn Foster both also recorded wins for ASU, winning by forfeit. Strand now is 11-2 in duals this season, while Foster posts a 10-3 record.

The Devils continue conference play next weekend when they face the Oregon schools. On Friday, February 5th, the Sun Devils wrestle the host Oregon Ducks. The following day, February 6th, ASU wrestles 17th-ranked Oregon State. The Sun Devils return home on February 19th for a double dual with BYU and Embry Riddle.
