TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- The eighth-ranked Arizona State Sun Devil baseball team kicks off the 2003 season this weekend with the annual Alumni Weekend, featuring a golf tournament Friday and the Alumni game Saturday at 1 p.m. at Packard Stadium. The Devils officially open the 2003 campaign in just under a week with a six-game series at Hawai'i-Hilo starting Jan. 16 at 6 p.m.

The weekend festivities will start Friday with the golf tournament at The Legacy in Phoenix. Former Sun Devil great that are scheduled to appear in the golf tournament and throughout the weekend include all-time ASU home run champion Bob Horner (1976-78), million dollar outfield member Tommy Adams (1989-91), pitching ace Larry Gura (1967-69), all-Pac-10 catcher Don Wakamatsu (1982-85), All-American pitcher Floyd Bannister (1974-76), former major leaguer Sal Bando (1964-65) and All-American pitcher Eddie Bane (1971-73). Arizona State will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Bane's perfect game in 1973, the only recorded feat in Sun Devil baseball history.

The alumni game, which features free admission and parking for fans at Packard Stadium, is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Several recent and past alumni are tentatively scheduled to play, including former big league pitcher Doug Henry (1983-85), Blas Minor (1987-88), Eric Doble (1999-2001), Richy Leon (1995-98), 1991 Golden Spikes Award winner Mike Kelly (1989-91), ASU single-season home run record holder Mitch Jones (1999-2000), former major leaguer Ken Phelps (1975-76), Andrew Beinbrink (1996-99), Mike Collins (1996-98), Sergio Garcia (2002), Brooks Conrad (1999-2001), Ty Johnson (1997-2001), Mel Stocker (2000-2001), Cesar Castillo (2000-2002) and three-time All-American catcher Casey Myers (1998-2001).

The 2003 Sun Devils feature 21 returning letterwinners and four preseason All-Americans in junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Schroyer, junior outfielder Rodney Allen, junior designated hitter Jeremy West and junior outfielder Andre Ethier. The Devils will play 40 of their 62-game regular season schedule in the state of Arizona, including 37 games in the friendly confines of Packard Stadium.

The golf tournament kicks off the weekend with a 12:30 shotgun start. Good spots are still available and for more information please call the ASU Alumni Office at 480-965-2133.
