TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State's 2008 baseball recruiting class has been ranked #8 in the nation, according to Collegiate Baseball. This marks the tenth straight season that ASU has been ranked in the Top 15 of recruiting classes by Collegiate Baseball.
The 2008 class features 17 newcomers, including 10 incoming freshmen, five Junior College transfers and two four-year transfers. LSU had the number one ranked recruiting class in the nation. ASU will team the 17 recruits with 24 returners from last season's Pac-10 Championship team that advanced to the 20th College World Series in school history.
"I'm interested in a few good men who aren't looking to play down to other people's expectations, but to do something incredible," said 14th year head coach Pat Murphy. The Sun Devils newcomers include several talented freshmen, led by RHP/UTL Seth Blair (Rock Falls, Ill.). Blair is one of five freshmen who were drafted in the 2007 MLB Draft. Blair was a 47th round choice of the Athletics, after making it known early that he would don the Maroon and Gold of Arizona State. Other incoming freshmen who were drafted in the 2007 draft are RHP Kyle Brule (Chandler, Ariz.), who was a 21st round pick of the Tigers, RHP Devin Fuller (Gilbert, Ariz.), a 14th round selection of the Dodgers, OF/LHP Matt Newman (Glendale, Ariz.), a 49th round pick of the Diamondbacks, and RHP RJ Preach (Phoenix, Ariz.), who went to the Rays in the 33rd round. They are joined by OF Andy Workman (Chandler, Ariz.), OF Tillman Pugh (Oakland, Calif.), IF Brandon Macias (Flagstaff, Ariz.), C Andrew Pollak (Chandler, Ariz.) and C Coby Cress (Waddell, Ariz.) as the freshmen class of 2008. Newman's father Randy played two seasons at Arizona State (1981-82) and was a member of the 1981 National Champions.
Four of the five junior college transfers have also heard their name called during the MLB draft. IF Marcel Champagnie (Bolton, Ontario, Canada) was a 34th round pick of the Twins in 2006, IF Jake Elmore (Pleasant Grove, Ala.) was a 48th round selection by the Marlins in 2007, RHP Stephen Sauer (Las Vegas, Nev.) was taken in the 31st round by the Rays in 2007, while RHP Reyes Dorado (Fontana, Calif.) has been drafted twice. The Marlins took him in the 43rd round in 2004 and the Pirates picked him in the 46th round in 2007. Rounding out the junior college transfers is IF Mike Murphy (Templeton, Calif.).
OF Jason Kipnis (Northbrook, Ill.) joins the Devils after transferring from Kentucky following his freshman season in 2007. RHP Jason Franzblau (Louisville, Ky.) comes to Tempe from Winthrop, where he led the Eagles pitching staff in wins last season.
