TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 19 Arizona State baseball team (31-12 overall, 7-4 Pacific-10 Conference) scored its first seven runs off homeruns, and went on to defeat Washington State (17-14, 1-7) 16-5 in front of 2,489 fans at Packard Stadium. Offensively, each ASU starter scored at least one run, while eight of the nine starters collected a hit. Catcher Trent Pratt and rightfielder Jeff Duncan both recorded three hits on the day with a double and two singles. Shortstop Willie Bloomquist went 2-for-4 with a homerun, a triple, two walks, three runs scored and five RBI. Bloomquist's triple in the third, his sixth of the season, ties him for second in career triples in the Pac-10. Third baseman Andrew Beinbrink went 2-for-3 with a homerun and three RBI. First baseman Casey Myers also homered for Arizona State.
The Sun Devils got on the board early, scoring three runs in the first inning off a homerun by Beinbrink. Shortstop Willie Bloomquist led off with a walk, and leftfielder Jay Sitzman followed with a single to rightfield, advancing Bloomquist to third. After Sitzman stole second, Beinbrink then stepped to the plate and hit his 10th homerun of the season over the leftfield wall.
Starter Chuck Crumpton earned his sixth win of the season going six innings, giving up nine hits and five earned runs, while striking out seven. Drew Friedberg recorded his first save, pitching three strong innings and giving up only two hits.
Third baseman Ray Hattenburg led the Cougars going 4-for-5 with two singles, two doubles and four RBI on the day. Centerfielder Steve Gleason went 2-for-4 with a single, double and one run scored. The Cougar's starter, Jamaal Gaines, picked up the loss going two and one thirds inning and giving up eight earned runs on six hits.
