Freshman Trio To Compete At USA Junior Cross Country Championships

TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State freshman distance runners Roger Cahill, JJ Duke and Amanda Lyon will compete in the USA Junior Cross Country Championships, held Saturday, Feb. 9, through Sunday, Feb. 10, at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site in Vancouver, Wash.

The Sun Devil trio will be vying for a spot on the U.S. team that will compete at the 2002 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, March 23-24, in Dublin, Ireland. The top six finishers in the junior and senior races qualify for the U.S. team.

Lyon (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) will compete in the Junior Women's 6K race scheduled for 10:45 a.m. PST, Saturday, Feb. 9. Cahill (Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge HS) and Duke (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) are slated for the Junior Men's 8K race held Sunday, Feb. 10, at 10 a.m. PST.

Duke is coming off an outstanding collegiate cross country debut in 2001, for which he was named the Pac-10 Men's Cross Country Newcomer of the Year by the league's coaches. Duke was the top freshman finisher at the Pac-10 Championships (15th), and earned All-Pac-10 and All-Region honors as well. Cahill and Lyon both redshirted the 2001 cross country season.
