TEMPE, Ariz. -

During the 2010 baseball season, lefthander Josh Spence will be writing about his life as a student-athlete who prepares for his final season of college baseball as well as graduating from Arizona State. Spence will check in periodically to write about school, baseball, life and other things.

So, a week's gone by and we're starting to get into our routine of going back to school, early morning workouts and back on the field with the team. Life's good and not a day goes by I don't look up at my name plate in the locker room and think about how blessed I am to play this great game here at ASU. It's an awesome time of the year. Spring training is about to start up soon and Sun Devil Alum's start poking their heads around the clubhouse getting ready to strap it on once again. It's very humbling to show up to the field and see guys like Andrew Romine, Petey Paramore, Kiel Roling, Brett Bordes, Ike Davis, Jason Kipnis and many others around the ball park. It's awesome to see where they are at in their lives and think that it wasn't that long ago when they were in our shoes, getting ready for another year of high expectation baseball with the Devils. To have the chance to not only see their work ethic around the field but to be able to hear tales of when they were in the Maroon and Gold is just priceless and something I know I'll look back on when my time is done here at ASU and really cherish.

Class is going well. I don't know if it's fortunately or unfortunate, but this semester I don't have any teammates in any classes with me, although I do enjoy my schedule never-the-less. I just have electives left to do, which essentially means I've done all my core credits that my degree requires and now I'm just tying up some bits and pieces so I can walk in May. I never saw myself graduating when I first embarked on this journey to the U.S., but then again I never saw baseball being a means to help pay for my education 15 years ago when I first started playing this beautiful game. It reminds me of a great quote that "no one person is bigger than the ball club". Whether you realize it or not, this game, your team, will give you more then you could ever give back. I know I'm very grateful for the experiences I've had in my life through baseball.

The team. What to say about the boys. You should never be content with how you're going or where you are because the moment you do so, the game will pass you. I think that sums up our team very well. We're working hard both on and off the field to maintain the level of excellence that comes with the territory of being a Sun Devil baseballer. Excitement is growing about the upcoming season. I will say this, our team is a very relaxed group of young men and I think that will serve us well in the long run. We understand that you need to get a little uncomfortable if you want to grow, but we also respect that there are some things you need to leave on the field at the end of the day, to have that short-term memory, so to speak. At the end of the day, when it's all said and done, growing (not only as a ball-player, but as a model citizen) is a choice, and I feel that this team has made that commitment and have chosen to grow thus far. But it's not how you start, it's how you finish. Let's just say we're looking forward to the journey.

Now one thing our team is buzzing about right now is the opportunity to mix with everyone at this year's pre-season banquet on Wednesday. Were very grateful for everyone who donates to the program and for all the season ticket holders out there. Another great way to support ASU baseball would be to come along and say hello to everyone on the 27th and get excited about the season ahead together. I hope to see you there!

Till next time, Take care:
Josh
