TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 20 Arizona State baseball team (27-11 overall, 3-3 Pac-10) swept the University of California Golden Bears (13-21, 2-4) with a 19-11 victory, despite being out hit 16-14, in front of 2,919 fans this afternoon at Packard Stadium. The Sun Devils have now won 13 straight over the Golden Bears.

Sophomore Casey Myers led the Sun Devils offensively, going 3-for-5 with seven RBI, four runs scored and two homeruns. Myers seven RBI and two-homeruns were career highs. Third baseman Andrew Beinbrink went 3-for-6 with two singles, a double, two RBI and two runs scored.

Arizona State broke the game open in the sixth inning scoring seven runs on two hits, four walks and two errors. Rightfielder Jeff Duncan and first baseman Jeff Phelps led off the inning with walks. Centerfielder Dustin Delucchi reached on a fielder's choice/sacrifice bunt to load the bases. Catcher Trent Pratt struck out looking. Duncan was out at home on a fielder's choice off the bat of shortstop Willie Bloomquist. Sitzman followed with a walk, scoring Phelps. Beinbrink reached on an error by the shortstop Jason Williams, allowing Delucchi to score. Myers followed with a grand slam to right center, his third homerun of the season.

"Casey's grand slam was the turning point," said Head Coach Pat Murphy. "It is good to get him back on track, it is a big plus for our ballclub."

Myers hit his fourth homerun of the year in the eighth, a two-run shot to right center off reliever Brad Steele.

Sophomore Chad Pennington picked up his fifth win of the season in relief. Pennington went four innings, giving up eight hits, five runs and striking out seven. Starter Jon Switzer went three innings giving up six hits and five earned runs, walking one and striking out three.

California took their first lead of the series in the third inning on catcher Mike Tonis's grand slam to left field. Center fielder Curtis Johnson led off the inning with a base hit to center, and left fielder Preston Sharp followed with a single to left. Rightfielder Rob Meyer struck out, and third baseman Xavier Nady walked to load the bases for Tonis.

Every Golden Bear starter collected at least one hit, with Tonis going 3-for-6 and four RBI. Sharp went 3-for-5 with three singles and a run scored.

Pitcher Jason Ball (2-2) took the loss pitching two-thirds of an inning, giving up three hits and three earned runs. Starter Trevor Hutchinson went three innings, giving up five hits, six runs and four walks.

ASU heads north to take on Oregon State for a three game series beginning Thursday in Corvallis, Ore.
