Box Score

SEATTLE, Wash. - Josh Spence was brilliant again on the hill for the Sun Devils, as the lefty fanned a career high 14 to lead #3 Arizona State to a 12-1 win over the Washington Huskies at Husky Ballpark in Seattle. Spence improved to 6-0 on the year for the Devils, who up their record to 22-5, 7-1 in Pac-10 play.

The win on Saturday was the 600th victory at Arizona State for head coach Pat Murphy, second most in school history.

Spence went eight innings, allowing eight hits and only an unearned run while striking out a career-high 14 to earn his sixth win of the year. Jordan Swagerty pitched the ninth to lock down the win.

Carlos Ramirez started the offense for the Devils in the top of the second with his team-leading 10th round-tripper of the year, a solo blast to left center. Drew Maggi would make it 2-0 with his two-out, RBI single that scored Andy Workman from second. Arizona State would extend the lead in the third thanks to some fundamental offense. After a Jason Kipnis single, he was moved to second on a sac bunt by Riccio Torrez. Kipnis promptly stole third then scored on a Ramirez RBI ground out that made it 3-0.

The Huskies would answer in the third, pushing an unearned run across off of Josh Spence to make it 3-1. Zack MacPhee would get that run back plus one with a two-run homer to left, his second of the season to make it 5-1.

The Sun Devils would add two more in the sixth to push the lead to 7-1. Drew Maggi brought home Matt Newman with a single up the middle, then Riccio Torrez brought home Maggi with a single through the left side.

Arizona State would put up a five spot in the ninth to put the game away and clinch the series. Maggi would bring home his third run of the game, singling to center with the bases loaded to make it 8-1. Raoul Torrez was hit by a pitch in the next at bat, forcing in a run, then another run would come home on a passed ball to make it 10-1. Jason Kipnis brought home two more with a double down the line to make it 12-1.

Jason Kipnis collected three hits for the Sun Devils, driving in two runs. Drew Maggi also had three hits and drove in three runs. Matt Newman and Zack MacPhee each had a pair of hits in the victory.

The Sun Devils and Huskies will wrap up the three-game series tomorrow at Husky Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
