With Major League Baseball having wrapped up their regular season and Minor League Baseball completing their postseason, it was another successful year for former Arizona State baseball players.
Barry Bonds, who wore the Maroon and Gold from 1983 to 1985, became baseball's all-time home run king, passing Hank Aaron's record of 755. Bonds finished the season with 762 career home runs. Bonds also made his 15th career All-Star appearance, earning the start for the game in San Francisco.
Leading the parade of other former Devils who had sterling seasons was Dustin Pedroia of the Boston Red Sox. The Rookie of the Year candidate, who was the 2003 Co-Pac-10 Player of the Year, is readying for the MLB Playoffs with the 2007 American League East Champion Red Sox. Pedroia hit .317 during the regular season for Boston, the highest batting average by a qualifying rookie second baseman since 1913.
Eleven other former Devils were part of division or league championship teams. Andrew Romine, who was on the 2007 Sun Devils, and the Orem Owlz won the Pioneer League crown, beating out former teammates CJ Retherford and Joe Persichina of the Great Falls White Sox. Colin Curtis, who was at ASU from 2004-06, and the Trenton Thunder won the Eastern League.
ASU saw two more baseball players begin their big league careers, as Travis Buck (Oakland) and Mel Stocker (Milwaukee) became the 87th and 88th all-time Major Leaguers in Arizona State history. Buck and Stocker were two of 11 Sun Devils in the majors, joining Bonds (San Francisco), Pedroia (Boston), Willie Bloomquist (Seattle), Chris Duffy (Pittsburgh), Andre Ethier (Los Angeles Dodgers), Ian Kinsler (Texas), Paul Lo Duca (New York Mets), Dennis Sarfate (Houston) and Jon Switzer (Tampa Bay).
