Finished the year with a runner-up finish in the College World Series, falling to USC in the title game 21-14...ended the year 41-23 overall...went 18-11 in the Six-Pac (third place) and 23-12 in non-conference action...Pat Murphy was named Baseball America's National Coach of the Year...team made its 18th overall appearance in the College World Series and advanced to the championship game for the first time since 1988...ASU has finished in the top three in Omaha in 14 of 18 appearances...1998 marked the fifth runner-up finish (1972, 1973, 1978, 1988 and 1998)...ASU entered the CWS as the No. 6 seed but topped No. 3 seeded Florida State 11-10, No. 2 seeded Miami 9-3 and No. 7 seeded Long Beach State 14-4...Willie Bloomquist ended the year hitting .414 and was a second-team All-American according to USA Today/Baseball Weekly...team had an 11-game win streak and a 12-game Six-Pac win streak from mid-March to mid-April...ASU beat seven straight ranked opponents in mid-season...ended the year ranked second by Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America...Andrew Beinbrink, Michael Collins and Rudy Arguelles were named to the College World Series All-Tournament Team...Midwest Regional honors went to MVP Mikel Moreno, as well as Jeff Phelps, Rudy Arguelles, Ryan Mills and Chad Pennington...the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) named Andrew Beinbrink to its first-team, while Ryan Mills (second team), Bloomquist (second team), Mikel Moreno (third team) and Casey Myers (third team) also earned the honor...Bloomquist was a third-team All-America pick from Baseball America and The Sporting News...Casey Myers (first-team) was a Freshman All-American according to The Sporting News, Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America (second-team)...Pat Murphy became the youngest (age 39) collegiate baseball coach to reach 500 wins when ASU topped California 7-6...Beinbrink, Bloomquist and Phill Lowery were named to the All-Pac-10 Southern Division Team, with Beinbrink a two-time selection...Pac-10 Players of the Week were Bloomquist (Mar. 10), Myers (Apr. 6 and 20), Beinbrink (Apr. 13)...Pac-10 Pitchers of the Week were Leon (Mar. 3), Lowery (Mar. 24) and Mills (Apr. 13)...Ryan Mills became ASU 21st first-round pick when he was the sixth overall pick by the Minnesota Twins.
