TEMPE, Ariz.- Arizona State Volleyball made stops around the state this past weekend in preparation for the upcoming season, visiting the historic Camp Tontozona and the Arizona State University West Campus.
Camp Tontozona- Arizona State Volleyball escaped the heat and made a stop at Camp Tontozona prior to practicing in Payson this past weekend, giving the team a chance to partake in the rituals and ASU traditions that have taken place at the site.
As the ASU football team was coming back down to the valley from their weeklong stay at Camp T, head coach Jason Watson and the Sun Devils made the journey up to the historic location.
Volleyball used the time to prepare for the season as well as a bonding experience for the Sun Devil squad, something that the site is known for.
“We talk about the coming season, outline expectations and practice in Payson,” Head coach Jason Watson commented about the team getaway. “In all, it sets the tone for the coming season.”
“This was the fourth year we have headed to Camp Tontozona. It’s become a tradition for our program. We love being able to get away and spend time together as a team.”
ASU WEST- Arizona State volleyball, along with ASU West, hosted the first-ever inter-squad scrimmage at the Sun Devil Fitness West Center, giving 250 incoming freshman and fans in the West Valley a first look at the 2013 squad.
In front of the lively crowd, the Sun Devils continued their preparation for the upcoming season in a different fashion before the annual Maroon and Gold scrimmage taking place this Saturday, Aug. 24 at Wells Fargo Arena.
Staff led students in chants and brought out the t-shirt gun, which enabled a game-like ambiance for the Sun Devils as they scrimmaged a three-game series.
“Chad Morgan, the director of the Student Recreational Center at ASU West, hosted a scrimmage for our program,” Coach Watson commented. “It’s the first time we’ve ever scrimmaged at another ASU campus.”
“The reception we received was above and beyond anything I imagined. It was a remarkable event. I can’t speak highly enough about the event and hope it becomes an ongoing part of our calendar.”
The Sun Devils now prepare for the annual Maroon and Gold scrimmage, taking place at 1 p.m. Saturday Aug. 24 at Wells Fargo Arena. For more details of the scrimmage as well as the free clinic for kids put on by the team following the practice, click here.
