TEMPE, Ariz.- The No. 18 Arizona State University volleyball team swept the University of Louisiana at Monroe, 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-14), Saturday night to win the ASU Marriott Invitational and claim its 11th sweep of the season.
In their second match of the day, the Sun Devils (11-1, 0-0 Pac-12) once again powered past the competition, racking up 44 kills, 42 digs and seven service aces on the ULM Warhawks. The Warhawks (4-12, 0-0 Sun Belt) were coming off of a win earlier in the day over the Alabama State Hornets.
Sophomore Bianca Arellano was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament after she racked up 38 assists throughout the match. Stephanie Preach and BreElle Bailey were also awarded All-Tournament honors.
The Warhawks tallied the first point on the board in the first set after sophomore Mercedes Binns made an error. However, Binns quickly redeemed herself by putting the Sun Devils on the board with a kill. Binns went on to generate another six kills during the match.
The Sun Devils emerged victorious from a closely-fought second set that left Bailey with a .700 attack percentage, sophomore Macey Gardner with 11 kills and the Sun Devils boasting more total kills, digs and blocks than the Warhawks.
All was “aces” in Wells Fargo Arena as the Sun Devils hammered down exactly seven service aces during the match, with Arellano, Preach, and Shannon McCready each contributing two.
All-in-all, the Sun Devil individual players bested the Warhawks in nearly every statistic including kills, assists, digs and individual points. The Sun Devils have now won 35 of their last 38 sets.
The Sun Devils will play again on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. in Wells Fargo Arena.
