TUCSON, Ariz.—The Arizona State volleyball team dropped a four-set battle to Pac-12 Conference rival Arizona, 3-1 (22-25, 25-16, 23-25, 21-25), on Friday at the McKale Center.

With the loss, ASU falls to 19-13 on the year and 8-12 in conference, while the Wildcats are 20-12 on the year and 10-10 in Pac-12 play.

“I thought we had some chances and we competed well,” head coach Jason Watson said. “The margins continue to be thin and we had these chances but we didn’t capitalize on them, and that’s what’s heartbreaking for this team.”

Macey Gardner led the way with 23 kills on the night, while BreElle Bailey posted 19 and Whitney Follette added 12 to ASU’s total of 64.

Each of the four sets were a battle, with ASU holding the Wildcats to only 11 kills in the second set, which ASU picked up, 25-16.

There were a total of 19 ties scores, including eight in the third set, and eight lead changes overall in the match.

“I don’t know if this was a must-win but it was a needed-win,” Watson said. “I think we’re very much a bubble team, and when you’re a bubble team and you lose, you’re feeling it. I’d like and hope that our body of work is such that we are at least on the board and being considered, and I think at this stage, that’s all we can ask for.”

ASU will discover its postseason fate on Sunday, Dec. 1, as the NCAA airs the 2013 Division I Volleyball Selection Show at 7:30 p.m. MT on ESPNU.
