TEMPE, Ariz. -- Former Arizona State University baseball standout Willie Bloomquist was recently named a second-team minor league baseball all-star by Baseball America.

Bloomquist, who starred for Pat Murphy's Sun Devils from 1997-99 as a shortstop and hit .394 for his career at ASU, split his 2000 professional season between the Single-A Lancaster Jethawks (California League) and Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers (Pacific Coast League).

The Port Orchard, Wash., native was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the third round of the amateur draft following his junior campaign at ASU. Bloomquist capped his illustrious Sun Devil career by being named the Pac-10 Player of the Year and a consensus All-American in 1999.

Between the Single-A and Triple-A levels in 2000, Bloomquist hit a combined .313 with 24 doubles, seven triples, three home runs and 74 RBI. The second baseman was also voted as a first-team Single-A all-star for his .379 performance with Lancaster and was recently named the top prospect in the Seattle Mariners organization by USA Today.

Bloomquist is back in Tempe this offseason finishing his degree at Arizona State and will be playing for Peoria in the Arizona Fall League that opens play Oct. 4 around the Valley.
