TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State pitcher Jon Switzer threw a perfect inning and catcher Casey Myers picked up three hits over the weekend to help lead the Team USA National Team to consecutive victories over Taiwan on the 2000 Qwest Red, White and Blue Tour.
Switzer (Houston, Texas) came in relief of Saturday's game in Trenton, N.J., and struck out two batters in his only inning of work. The junior to be for the Sun Devils was impressive over the course of the summer, posting a 1-0 record, 2.41 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 18.2 innings. Unfortunately, his summer stint with Team USA came to an end Sunday evening when he underwent emergency surgery to remove his appendix. As of Monday afternoon, the junior to be for the Sun Devils was in good shape in the hospital and is expecting a full and quick recovery, according to Team USA officials.
Myers (Casa Grande, Ariz.) had been struggling through the summer before breaking out for a 3-for-5 game in a 14-3 win over Taiwan on Sunday in Bridgeport, Conn.. The 2000 Pac-10 Player of the Year, Myers tallied three singles and drove home a run to raise his summer average to .250 (10x40).
Team USA is 17-3 over the summer and is currently riding a 10-game winning streak. The Red, White and Blue have won 12 of its last 13 and have not dropped a game since July 5.
