No. 4/5 Sun Devil Baseball Goes For Second Straight Win Over No. 18 Cal State Fullerton

Sun Devils Scoring Streak Tied For Active Lead at 332 Games: The Arizona State baseball program has scored in a Pac-10 record 332 straight games, not having been shutout since a 9-0 setback to USC on April 7, 1995. The streak is currently tied for the longest in NCAA Division I. Wichita State had not been shutout in 332 games as well, but lost last night 1-0 to Louisiana-Lafayette. ASU's 332-game streak ranks tied for third all-time, with Coastal Carolina holding the record at 349 games. If the Sun Devils are going to take over the national lead they are going to have to do it against one of the premier pitchers in the nation in Fullerton's Kirk Saarloos. In a battle of power vs. power, the hot ASU bats will have to overcome Saarloos' two consecutive shutouts and break his steak of 20 consecutive scoreless innings.

Recapping Last Night: The Sun Devils used a clutch two-out, two strike pinch-hit single from utility player Nick Walsh to score the tying and go-ahead runs in the seventh inning and clutch relief pitching to secure a come-from-behind 5-3 win over the 18th ranked Cal State Fullerton Titans (6-7). The win improved ASU to 13-2 on the season and its first win over a ranked opponent in 2001. Senior relief pitcher Drew Friedberg picked up his first win in over a year, throwing three solid innings, allowing only one hit. The senior LHP has not allowed a run to cross the plate in 11.0 innings this year. Redshirt freshman Bryce Kartler picked up his first career save, striking out the only two batters he faced to seal the victory. Senior All-American catcher Casey Myers had three hits for ASU, running his current hitting streak to 12 games.

Around The Horn With ASU Baseball: Brooks Conrad had recorded a hit in each of ASU's 14 games and had a 15-game hitting streak intact before last night's ballgame in which the junior went 0-for-3 with a run scored to snap the streak... Andy Torres is tied for the national lead with five wins, duplicated by two other pitchers who are also 5-0 for the year... he will go for his sixth win Saturday... ASU has not been shutout in 332 consecutive games, dating all the way back to 1995... Mike Lopez has recorded 10 doubles this year, already two from matching his total of 12 from last year... Casey Myers has recorded a hit in 13 of ASU's 15 games, with 12 of those being multi-hit games... his 12-game hitting streak has also included 11 games with at least one RBI... Myers has been a run-producing machine thus far, averaging nearly 2.0 RBI per game and is now just 49 RBI away from breaking the school and Pac-10 career record... Lopez is second on the team with nine multi-hit games and is the lone Sun Devil to tab four hits in a game... Freshman DH Rod Allen carries a nine-game hitting streak into this weekend and has started the last eight games for ASU... of Allen's 13 hits this season, eight have gone for extra bases... Freshman DH Jeremy West is tied for the team lead with Myers clubbing two home runs... as a team ASU has stolen 47 bases, already half way to its 2000 season total of 92... junior Mel Stocker leads the Devils with 13 stolen bases... freshman Steve Garrabrants isn't far back with 10... ASU has out-scored its opponent 165-49 in 2001, with the most decisive inning being a 19-1 difference in the third frame... ASU is 11-0 vs. right-handed starters, and have suffered both of its losses vs. LHP starters... a nice surprise for 2001 has been the large crowds at Packard Stadium, with ASU averaging 2,349 for the 13 dates...ASU is 11-0 when Jonah Martin is the leadoff hitter... the ASU bullpen has inherited 20 runners on base, only of which six have scored... ASU is riding a 2-game losing streak against the Titans heading into this weekend... the matchup between Fullerton and ASU has several interesting matchups... both 2001 recruiting classes were ranked No. 1 in the nation by different baseball publications... ASU earned top billing by Baseball America while the Titans filled the top spot by Collegiate Baseball... another interesting matchup is ASU senior All-American catcher Casey Myers and Fullerton's Friday starter Jon Smith... both are two of the nation's best student athletes with both earning All-America Academic honors last year with 4.0 GPA's in teh classroom... Myers and Saarloos also played together on Team USA... with RHP Saarloos taking the hill today, ASU is hitting .395 as a team vs. righties and .311 vs. lefties... the Devils are hitting .412 with runners in scoring position and .478 (11x23) with the bases loaded in 2001... ASU has three players on the roster from California, including shorstop Wyrick who is from Azusa which is only 10 minutes North of Fullerton... Conrad and Walsh are also from the state of California.
