TEMPE, Ariz. -
During the 2010 baseball season, lefthander Josh Spence will be writing about his life as a student-athlete who prepares for his final season of college baseball as well as graduating from Arizona State. Spence will check in periodically to write about school, baseball, life and other things.
What a weekend it was. It all started Friday at the alumni golf tournament over at the Karsten Golf course, where we had a massive turnout from past players in the program. It was fantastic to see the support from former players in the program and hear about what their time was like at ASU. We were all assigned a hole to sit at for the day and I was on the 16th which was a par 3, a difficult one at that. Now I’d hate to throw anyone “under the bus” so to say, but more balls went in the drink then on the green. That’s just my recollection, however most of the Alum’s will probably say different. Two of my favorite alumni, who played in the early 90’s, were Tommy Adams and Jon Halland. were You’ll never meet two greater guys. I was very fortunate to meet them last year during the season and they really made me feel a part of the Sun Devil family so it was good to see them again.
Saturday marked the day of our Alumni game and it was an extraordinary showing. All jokes aside, they had a pretty unbelievable team and it was a fun day for all. The banter throughout the game between the past vs. present players was hilarious and the Kipnis vs. Calhoun At bat will be one remembered for a very long time. The pinnacle of the day was the late game spark from the Alum’s when Bill Schorr, a catcher back in ’87, moon shot an Alex Blackford fast ball to deep left field that cleared both fences and truthfully might have landed in Tempe Town Lake. Who knows?
This Thursday, men’s Basketball will play Oregon State at 6:30pm at Wells Fargo Arena and at half time our team will be announced, so if you’re looking for a great way to support both baseball and basketball, come down, say hello and cheer on the Devils with us.
Till next time, take care!
