Senior leftfielder Mitch Jones hit two huge homeruns and collected four RBI as Arizona State baseball defeated Utah 11-6 today at Packard Stadium. The Sun Devils improve to 2-0 on the year, the Utes fall to 0-2.
Utah jumped on the board early on a solo homer by Jamie Hardy in the second inning. The Utes made it 2-0 on another solo shot by centerfielder Sam Swenson in the third.
The Devil would counter with two runs in the fourth off of a two-run homer by Jones over the leftfield fence. After posting a 5-2 lead heading into the seventh, Utah took the lead, scoring four runs that inning. ASU would tie the game in the bottom of the seventh when designated hitter Brendan Hines hit a sacrfice fly scoring Jones.
Arizona State took the lead for good in the eighth after a single by centerfielder Jeff Duncan scored two runs for the Devils. Junior Casey Myers would hit a sacrifice fly to score another run for ASU before Mitch Jones hit his second homer of the day scoring the final two runs.
Reliever Jason Fingers picked up the win on the mound for ASU, pitching 1.1 shutout innings. Sophomore Franco Pezely closed out the game with a perfect inning of work with two strikeouts. Starter Chad Pennington went 4.0 innings, allowing two runs with two strikeouts in his no-decision.
Taking the loss for the Utes was reliever Brandon Ballard who gave up six hits and seven runs in 2.1 innings pitched. Centerfielder Sam Swenson led the team with a two-for-four effort at the plate as well as Tommy Maestas who went two-for-three on the afternoon.
For the Devils, Jones went three-for-five with three runs scored and four RBI. Shortstop Dennis Wyrick went two-for-four with two RBI while junior Jeff Phelps turned in a three-for-four performance at the plate.
