TEMPE, Ariz. - Drew Maggi's walk-off RBI single up the middle propelled top-ranked Arizona State to a 3-2 win and a three-game Pac-10 series sweep of Cal in front of the third consecutive sell out crowd at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. The win improves ASU to 23-0, 3-0 in Pac-10 play.
Maggi's single with two outs scored Raoul Torrez, who had singled with two away and then stole second to set up the game-winner. Jordan Swagerty (1-0) picked up the win in relief after catching the first eight innings.
Jake Borup turned in the best performance of his career, but ended up with a no decision. Borup struck out a career high 13 hitters in his 7.2 innings of work, allowing only one run on only two hits. He allowed a hit against Cal's first hitter of the game and then did not allow another until the top of the eighth inning, a span of 22 batters.
Cal got a run in the first on an RBI fielder's choice groundout by Mark Canha to take an early 1-0 lead. The Golden Bears would hold that lead until the bottom of the eighth.
The Devils were finally able to break through against Cal starter Dixon Anderson in the eighth, plating two runs to take a 2-1 lead. After Drew Maggi led off the inning with a single, Kole Calhoun brought him home with a double to left. Calhoun took third on a throwing error by Cal shortstop Marcus Semien. He would score on a Riccio Torrez single up the middle that gave ASU the lead at 2-1.
Cal would answer back in the ninth against Jordan Swagerty, plating an unearned run to tie the game. Mark Canha's RBI double tied the game at 2 apiece, setting up Maggi's big hit.
Maggi went 3-4, scoring a run and knocking in the game-winner. Riccio Torrez also had three hits in the win. Borup, Mitchell Lambson and Jordan Swagerty combined to allow only one earned run in nine innings, giving up only three hits and striking out 14.
The sold out weekend at Packard Stadium is the first since Arizona State sold out the Arizona series last season.
The Sun Devils head to Eugene, Oregon for a Pac-10 series with the Oregon Ducks on Thursday night.
