TEMPE, Ariz. -- The 12th-ranked Arizona State baseball team (12-3, 0-0) took advantage of five New Mexico errors to defeat the Lobos (1-6, 0-0) 8-1 tonight in front of 1,207 fans at Packard Stadium.

Starting pitcher Will Waldrip picked up his fourth win of the season to improve to 4-1. He turned in another impressive performance, giving up one run on four hits, four walks and nine strikeouts.

The Sun Devils scored first, taking advantage of two errors by the Lobos in the bottom of the first. Arizona State broke the game open in the seventh, scoring four runs on two hits and two errors. Shortstop Willie Bloomquist led off the inning with a single, advancing to second on a throwing error by the leftfielder. Jay Sitzman reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, advancing Bloomquist to third. Third baseman Andrew Beinbrink was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Catcher Casey Myers knocked a three-run double to center and would eventually score.

Bloomquist finished the night 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored. Sitzman had a 1-for-4 outing with two runs scored and three stolen bases, while Myers went 1-for-4, knocking in three and scoring one. First baseman Mitch Jones hit a solo home run to lead of the sixth inning. Jones went 1-for-3 on the night. Head coach Pat Murphy was pleased, but believes their offense will continue to improve.
