TEMPE, Ariz.—Arizona State University and Sun Devil Athletics are announcing new tailgating restrictions and requirements that will enhance public safety before and during Sun Devil Football games and improve the experience for students, residents in surrounding communities and Sun Devil Nation.

The newly adopted tailgating practices were recommended by the Statewide Student Safety Task Force to the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR).  The Task Force was established by ABOR in the fall of 2013 to promote the safety of students both on- and off-campus, and to seek best practices to support and encourage student safety and new ways to promote healthy behaviors and activities for students.

“The tailgating recommendations are based on the cooperative relationship between ASU and the City of Tempe including our shared goals for the wellbeing of our community,” said Jim Rund, senior vice president for Educational Outreach and Student Services. “We believe these changes will enhance the game day experience and ensure a higher standard of safety.”

Aligning itself with Northern Arizona and the University of Arizona, Arizona State University will no longer permit the use of kegs in designated tailgate parking lots surrounding Sun Devil Stadium. For safety concerns, ASU and Sun Devil Athletics also will not permit the use of apparatuses or engaging in activities that encourage reckless consumption of alcoholic beverages, including but not limited to the use of beer bongs and participating in drinking games. ASU and law enforcement agencies around the Valley, including the City of Tempe Police Department will enforce the amended tailgate restrictions and requirements.

“The safety of Sun Devil Nation and the guests who visit Sun Devil Stadium is a primary concern,” said Ray Anderson, vice president for University Athletics. “Tailgating is one of the great traditions of football, but we are encouraging our fans and visitors to act responsibly on game day. There is a lot of fun to be had at a Sun Devil football game, especially on the field.”

Arizona State University and Sun Devil Athletics allow tailgating for season-ticket holder lots five hours prior to kick off, with all other university lots opening 3.5 hours prior to kick off.
