Throughout the year, we'll be profiling outstanding members of the Sun Devil Marching Band and Spirit Squad. Here is our first installment with senior Drum Major Riley Malloy.

Riley Malloy
Senior
Fourth year with band
Math/Physics major

Q: What is a Drum Major?
A: A Drum Major is a leadership role in rehearsal as well as the conductor for both pregame shows and halftime...There are three of us; we're basically the right hand of the director.

Q: Why marching band?
A: Marching band is not only a great experience in a performance way, but you also get to perform with a group of people that you spend a lot of time bonding with. It's a specific experience...you spend so much time aiming for such a level of precision and perfection that other [music] ensembles don't. It's a great experience when you put on a great performance.

Q: What's your favorite musical group right now?
A: I'm really into this band called "Said the Whale" right now.

Q: What's the weirdest thing on your iPod?
A: Oh...probably piano concertos.

Q: What's your favorite food?
A: Mashed potatoes.

Q: You're both a physics and math major; what do you want to do with that?
A: I want to be a mathematician in the corporate world and eventually go on to be a professor of math.

Q: But what did you want to be when you were a kid?
A: I always really wanted to be a pilot or astronaut...but recently I decided that math is the way I wanted to go.

Q: Who's your celebrity crush?
A: Scarlett Johansson.

Q: Who is your favorite ASU football player?
A: Taylor Kelly. He's a great leader!
