Throughout the year, we'll be profiling members of the Spirit Squad and Band. This week, Senior Roxi Jarvis.
4th year on the squad
Educational Studies Major
Q: What made you want to join Spirit Squad?
A: I cheered all four years of high school and I've cheered since I was tiny. I was always kind of a dream to cheer in college. I came here not thinking I was going to make it, but I did and it has been the best experience of my life. I just love everything about it.
Q: What's one of the biggest things you've learned from this experience?
A: probably patience. From when I was a first year where not everything came to you. I went from being the captain of my high school team to being a freshman here and it was a big awakening and I just had to be patient and now, the first couple of weeks are always toughest with the new girls but I've learned to wait and work with them. I've learned a lot of leadership the past four years.
Q: What do you think is the biggest misconception about being on the Spirit Squad?
A: That we dance on the sidelines and that's all we do; that we just show up to the game and look pretty in our uniforms and shake our pom poms and what they don't know is we practice three or four times a week, sometimes two-a-days. We do work really hard, what people see is a lot of hard work.
Q: What has been your best memory from the past four years?
A: I would say the Pac 12 tournament last year for basketball. That was really fun and our team did really well and we got to do two games, which was amazing. Also, last year's U of A football game when we won down in Tucson. We were cheering so loud!
Q: What do you want to want to do when you're done with ASU and the Spirit Squad?
A: I want to do Event Planning for non-profit organizations. I want to do something along those lines.
Q: What activities are you involved in?
A: I'm in a sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta. I also have a job at the Arizona Country Club and I just started an internship for a non-profit called Tumbleweed.
Q: What's your favorite sport just to watch as a fan?
A: I love all sports, but I would have to say basketball because it's fast-paced and interesting all the time.
Q: What's your favorite basketball team?
A: The Lakers. I'm a die hard Laker fan, I'm from California.
Q: What is the one item you can't live without?
A: As cliché as it sounds, my phone. Just because it has internet, it has weather, it has maps, and I'm so bad with directions so I need that! Plus, news and social media.
Q: Maroon or Gold?
A: Gold just because it stands out more and there's not a ton of teams that have our special shade of gold.
