TEMPE, Ariz. -- After starting strong with a 3-0 record at the 12th annual National Invitational Softball Tournament in San Jose, California, the eighth-ranked Arizona State softball team (18-5) finished winning only one of their last three games to post a 4-2 mark.

Late Saturday, ASU registered a 3-0 shutout over defending NIST champion Colorado State, but then in the second game the Sun Devils got shutout by Pac-10 foe California, 2-0. On Sunday, ASU fell to Creighton 4-3 in eight innings to post their first back to back losses this season.

Against Colorado State, Roxanne Tsosie went the distance, allowing eight hits while striking out eight for the complete game shutout. Erin Hull continued to hit well in the tournament, going 2 for 4 with a run scored. Also, Melissa Miller and Jen Langenhuizen chipped in with a hit apiece.

Despite out hitting California 6-4, ASU could not find the plate as they were shutout for only the third time this season. Langenhuizen went 2 for 3 and Raja Woods, Chris Gill and Andrea Rodgers each had a hit. Carrie Breedlove (8-3) suffered the loss, giving up only four hits.

Against Creighton, the Lady Jays extended ASU into the eighth inning before scoring the winning run on the international tiebreaker rule. Holly Smith went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Breedlove pitched for five and a third, allowing Creighton seven hits and three runs, while striking out a season-high 10. Pitching the final two and two-thirds, Tsosie (10-2) took the loss, giving up two hits and one run.

Up next, Arizona State will host Iowa State in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 17 at 6:00 p.m., at Sun Devil Club Stadium.
