TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State has announced its baseball schedule for the 2001 season. The 43rd season of Sun Devil baseball tradition will begin with a Jan. 26 game vs. Texas-Arlington at Packard Stadium. The defending Pac-10 champion Sun Devils will host 36 games at Packard Stadium, with 15 consecutive to open the 2001 slate.

Highlights of the 2001 schedule include a tough Pac-10 schedule with Stanford, Washington State, Arizona and UCLA at home. The Sun Devils will face five teams that advanced to the NCAA tournament last year, including a three-game homestand with defending national champion LSU, March 2-4 at Packard Stadium.

In addition to ASU's 36 home games, the Sun Devils will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to play a two-game series in early May against the Tennessee Volunteers and will also travel to Fullerton, Calif., to take on the nationally ranked Cal State Fullerton Titans (Feb. 23-25).

The Sun Devils return 15 letterman and nine starters from the 2000 squad that finished with a 44-15 record and a share of the Pac-10 championship. Casey Myers returns for his senior campaign and is a top preseason candidate for the NCAA Player of the Year Award. Myers hit .412 with 18 home runs and 97 RBI in 2000, and was also named the Academic All-American of the Year. All-American Jon Switzer (LHP), freshman All-American Dennis Wyrick (SS) and three-year starter Jeff Phelps (Utility) are also back.

Head Coach Pat Murphy returns to the helm of the Sun Devils for his seventh season in Tempe. The 2000 Pac-10 Coach of the Year and 1998 Baseball America Coach of the year, has a 232-123 career record at ASU and has led the Sun Devils to top 12 rankings in three of the last four seasons. Murphy is coming off a summer stint with the Netherlands national baseball team, guiding the Dutch to a 3-4 record in the Olympic and knocking off international power Cuba.

The Sun Devils officially open fall practice October 16, but open scrimmages will not begin until Oct. 30. ASU will conduct fall practices through Nov. 11. Times on all fall practices will be released at a later date. The Sun Devils will unofficially kick off the 2001 season with the annual Alumni Day, which is scheduled for Jan. 15 at 1 p.m. at Packard Stadium.
