Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. - Matt Newman had four hits and drove in three runs on Senior Day to lead the Arizona State University baseball team to a 10-5 win over UCLA on Sunday at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. The Sun Devils complete the regular season with a 39-16 overall record, 17-10 in the Pac-10.

Newman's four hits included a go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth that put the Sun Devils in front for good, and he added an RBI double in the sixth. All nine Sun Devil starters had a hit in the game, with Xorge Carrillo getting three hits and Johnny Ruettiger, Deven Marrero, Riccio Torrez and Zack MacPhee adding two hits apiece.

Mitchell Lambson got the start on the mound, his first of the season and just the second of his ASU career. He went five innings, allowing six hits and three runs with six strikeouts to earn the win and improve to 5-3 on the season.

UCLA scored in the first inning for the third straight day, but Lambson worked around a leadoff triple to allow only one run. The Sun Devils got on the board in the third with an RBI triple by Ruettiger and a sac fly by Marrero to take a 2-1 lead.

The Bruins took the lead back in the top of the fifth with two two-out runs against Lambson, but the ASU offense answered back in the bottom of the inning. Joey DeMichele singled home Marrero to tie the score, and two batters later, Newman stroked his sixth home run of the season over the fence in right field. They would add one more in the inning on a bases loaded walk by Ruettiger.

Newman's RBI double in the sixth made it 7-3, and then RBI singles by Ruettiger and Torrez in the seventh increased the lead to 9-3. UCLA loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the eighth and scored two runs, but Alex Blackford came on from the bullpen and got a strikeout and an inning-ending double play to escape with no further damage. Carrillo had an RBI single in the eighth to cap off the scoring.

The Sun Devils now move on to the NCAA Tournament, and they were selected on Sunday as one of 16 Regional hosts. The full 64-team field will be announced on Monday at 9:30 a.m. on ESPN.
