SEATTLE - The No. 19 Washington baseball team used two home runs from shortstop Kevin Miller and another from designated hitter Ed Erickson to hand No. 16-ranked Arizona State an 8-6 loss in the first game of a three-game nonconference series at Husky Ballpark. ASU also hit three home runs.
The win was the 200th of Husky coach Ken Knutson's career. The sixth-year skipper currently holds an overall mark of 200-120. Washington improved to 15-6 on the season and won its eighth straight game at Husky Ballpark.
Arizona State (20-13) was the first Pac-10 Southern Division team to play the Huskies in Seattle since 1981, when Stanford's John Elway came to the old Graves Field for the Pac-10 Playoffs.
Husky starter Jeff Heaverlo (1-1), in his first start, earned the victory for the Huskies, throwing 5.2 innings and fanning eight. Thanks to a wild pitch, Heaverlo struck out four batters in the first inning alone. Senior Cody Morrison worked the ninth for this third save. ASU starter Phill Lowery (5-4) suffered the loss. He gave up all three Husky homers and allowed seven runs in five-plus innings.
ASU took the lead in the second on a solo homer by first baseman Jeff Phelps. Miller's first homer, a leadoff blast in the fourth, tied the game. Later that inning, an Erickson single and a Dominic Woody groundout scored to more to give Washington a 3-1 lead.
South Kitsap High grad and ASU shortstop Willie Bloomquist tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth with a two-run homer to left, his first of the season, but Miller's second solo homer, in the fifth, gave Washington a 5-4 lead and Erickson's two-run bomb in the sixth iced it.
Casey Myers, the Sun Devils' DH, hit a three-run homer in the eight to draw within two runs.
The Huskies and Sun Devils play the second of three games Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The game will air live on KRPM AM-1090.
