STANFORD, Calif. - Junior center fielder Jody Gerut (Villa Park, IL/Willowbrook HS) drove in five runs to lead top-ranked Stanford (40-8-1 overall, 21-6 in the Pac-10 Southern Division) to a 12-8 win over Arizona State (33-20, 18-11) on Sunday afternoon at Sunken Diamond.

The three-game sweep of the Sun Devils moves Stanford one win away from its second straight Pacific-10 Conference Southern Division title with three games remaining. The Cardinal leads No. 6 USC (19-8) by two games, with the Trojans coming to The Farm for a three-game set next weekend (Saturday & Sunday @ 1 p.m., Monday @ 6 p.m.). USC must sweep Stanford in order to capture the division championship.

Stanford jumped out to a 6-1 lead after two innings, and held on from there in the 3-hour, 40-minute slugfest. Freshman Joe Borchard (Camarillo, CA/Camarillo HS) had a two-run double in a three-run first inning, and sophomore Jeff Rizzo (San Diego, CA/La Jolla HS) hit a two-run homer in the three-run second.

The Sun Devils, however, came back to cut the lead to 6-5 after three-and-a-half. Sophomore Willie Bloomquist (Port Orchard, WA/South Kitsap HS) keyed a three-run fourth inning rally with a two-RBI single. Gerut then put the game away with a two-RBI single in the bottom half of the fourth and a three-run homer, his 16th of the year, in the sixth.

Freshman Austin Coose (Kokomo, IN/Kokomo HS) picked up the win with 2.0 innings of scoreless relief to improve to 3-0. Junior Josh Hochgesang (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills HS) added three hits and two RBI for the winners, while Rizzo went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI.

Junior Mikel Moreno (Mesa, AZ/Mesa HS) had three hits to lead ASU, while Bloomquist scored two and drove in two.

Stanford returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts San Jose State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Sunken Diamond. Arizona State, which had its Monday game at Cal cancelled because it does not affect the conference title race, is next in action on Tuesday at UNLV at 5 p.m.
