TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Arizona State University cross country teams competed at the 2009 NCAA Championships on the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind., on Monday afternoon with the Sun Devil men taking 19th overall and the women 24th. Individually for the men, Brandon Bethke was the lone Sun Devil to earn All-America honors as he finished seventh overall in the men's 10,000m run.

In the team standings, the men scored 472 points and placed 19th overall, giving them their fifth Top 20 finish in six appearances at the national meet. Their point total and overall placement rank as the fourth-best in the history of the program as well. Oklahoma State won the team title with 127 points and was followed in the Top 5 by 2008 champion Oregon (143), Alabama (173), Northern Arizona (190) and William & Mary (226). The women tallied 520 points, their ninth-best total all-time, and placed 24th overall with Villanova taking the crown with 86 points. The women's Top 5 was rounded out by Florida State (133), 2008 champion Washington (188), Texas Tech (191) and Princeton (251).

The men led off the day's competition with senior Bethke posting an impressive day as the Sun Devil leader placed seventh overall in 29:38.3 and earning his first All-America honor in cross country. Bethke's time ranks as the fastest all-time by a Sun Devil in the 10,000m run in Terre Haute while also giving him the highest finish in program history, surpassing the ninth-place showing of Aaron Aguay0 in 2006. Only Lisa Aguilera's placement of fifth for the women in 2000 stands as a higher finish by any Sun Devil at the NCAA meet.

Bethke was followed across the line by Jeff Helmer, who placed 82nd overall with a time of 30:46.7, the fifth-best time for a Sun Devil at the national meet in Terre Haute, while Patrick Milloy also etched his name on the all-time Top 10 list at No. 10 with his run of 31:15.7 to finish 136th overall. Zeke Van Patten (172nd, 31:34.2) and Dylan Hatcher (189th, 31:47.09) rounded out the scoring positions for the team while Ben Engelhardt (201st, 31:57.0) and Nick Happe (237th, 33:17.1) also competed in the event.

On the women's side, Allie Kieffer led the charge for the Sun Devils as she finished 49th overall -- just nine spots from All-America honors -- with a time of 20:55.8, which stands as the seventh-best all-time in Terre Haute for a Sun Devil woman. Kieffer was followed by Kari Hardt (93rd, 21:15.8), Lindsay Prescott (151st, 21:40.7), Anna Sperry (154th, 21:41.7) and Ali Kielty (190th, 21:59.2) in the five scoring positions while Angela Spadafino (222nd, 22:26.7) and Kate Lydy (232nd, 22:43.0) also ran in the race.

The NCAA meet concludes the 2009 collegiate season for the Sun Devils. They will next compete in indoor track events when that season gets underway in January.
