TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- The seventh-ranked Arizona State baseball team kicks off the 2004 season this weekend with the annual Alumni Weekend, featuring a golf tournament Friday (Jan. 16) and the Alumni game Saturday at 1 p.m. at Packard Stadium. The Devils officially open the 2004 campaign in three weeks with a three-game series against perennial national power Florida State, Feb. 6-8.
The alumni game, which features free admission and parking for fans at Packard Stadium, is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Several recent and past alumni are tentatively scheduled to play, including several recent Devils that are playing professional baseball. Highlighting the alumni roster are current major leaguers, Jeff Duncan (New York Mets) and Willie Bloomquist (Seattle Mariners). Additional former Sun Devils who are currently in the minor leagues and are scheduled to play in the game include: Andre Ethier (Oakland A's), Beau Vaughan (Boston Red Sox), Cesar Castillo (Chicago White Sox), Brooks Conrad (Houston Astros), Dennis Wyrick (Baltimore Orioles), Andrew Beinbrink (Texas Rangers), Bryce Kartler (New York Yankees), and Chris Duffy (Pittsburgh Pirates).
The 2004 Sun Devils enter the season ranked in four of the preseason polls, including top 10 rankings by Collegiate Baseball (#7) and ESPN/Sports Weekly (#10). ASU features 12 returning letterwinners, but only two of their top seven pitchers from last years squad returns for 2004. Junior shortstop Dustin Pedroia and junior outfielder Jeff Larish were both named preseason All-Americans and are top candidates for national player of the year honors. The Devils will play 40 of their 56-game regular season schedule in the state of Arizona, including 33 games in the friendly confines of Packard Stadium.
The alumni game is free admission, but fans interested in season or individual game tickets can call the ASU ticket office at (480) 965-2381. Information on season ticket packages will also be available at the front gates of Packard Stadium prior to the start of the Alumni game.
