TEMPE, Ariz. -- To be the best, you have to play the best. An often quotable phrase from Arizona State eighth year baseball head coach Pat Murphy, the 2002 season will be no exception, as the Sun Devils released their challenging 55-game schedule to the public and media Friday morning.

As it was officially announced by ASU Athletic Director Gene Smith earlier this week, the Sun Devils will play all but three of its home games at Hohokam Park in Mesa this year due to a multi-million dollar renovation of Packard Stadium, the home of ASU Baseball.

The Sun Devils, who have advanced to the NCAA Tournament in four of the past five seasons and played for the National Championship in 1998, will officially open the 2002 campaign Jan. 31 in a non-conference game vs. Oregon State as part of the inaugural Bill Kajikawa Baseball Classic. ASU's 2002 schedule includes 12 games against teams that participated in the 2001 College World Series (Tennessee, Cal State Fullerton, USC, Stanford) and 22 of the club's 55 scheduled contests (40%) are versus teams that qualified for the 2001 NCAA Tournament. ASU will also match-up against perennial national powers Florida State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Notre Dame during the 2002 season in non-conference action.

"Year in and year out we try to schedule games that will challenge us and make Arizona State the best possible team it can be," said Murphy. "It is the only way our players like to have it, playing against the best everyday. High risk, high reward when it comes down to it."

The 2002 home schedule features 35 games, including Pac-10 contests against Washington, California, USC and Oregon State. ASU will also host Tennessee and Cal State Fullerton in the month of February to highlight its tough non-conference slate. After opening the season with the Kajikawa Baseball Classic, the Devils will then embark on a tough three-week stretch against three of college baseball's premier programs. ASU will host Tennessee (Feb. 8-10), the travel to hostile Tallahassee, Fla., for a three game set vs. Florida State (Feb. 15-17) and then host Cal State Fullerton (Feb. 22-24) at Hohokam Park.

The Sun Devils will also continue a recent trend that has seen them venture east during the middle of the Pac-10 season to take on a nationally ranked opponent. Repeating a similar trip in which ASU traveled to Knoxville last year where they split a two-game series vs. No. 18 Tennessee, ASU will make a swing through Oklahoma to play the Sooners (April 24) at Southwestern Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City and then continue on for a pair of games against Notre Dame. Murphy will be making his first trip to take on the program he helped build from the ground up, taking on the Fighting Irish in a pair of games (Apr. 26-27) at Eck Stadium in South Bend, Ind. Murphy coached the Irish from 1988 to 1994, taking the program from a non-funded sport to an NCAA Championship contender. Murphy was 318-116-1 in his ND career, leading the Irish to postseason play four times. The Devils will also face Portland, New Mexico State, Loyola Marymount, Oral Roberts, Oklahoma State, St. John's and UNLV in non-conference action.

The Sun Devils unofficially kick off the 2002 season with the annual Alumni Game on Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. at Packard Stadium. ASU will begin team practices for the 2002 season Jan. 2nd at Hohokam Park. Practice times will run in the mid-morning from Jan. 2 until school starts, and then fall into a normal 3 p.m. routine. The 2002 Sun Devil current roster consists of 33 players, including All-America candidates Mike Esposito (RHP) and Rod Allen (OF). ASU lost eight of its top position players and four pitchers from the 2001 squad, but return six top position players, 14 lettermen and have added 17 newcomers to the program that are ready to step right in and contend in the national spotlight.
