ON THE STARTING LINE
After a solid opening-week performance at the Dave Murray Invitational last weekend, the Arizona State cross country teams travel to the Les Bolstadt Golf Course in Minneapolis, Minn., for the annual Roy Griak Invitational. The men open the racing Saturday at noon with an 8,000m run with the women following at 1 p.m. for a 6,000m race.

THE ROY GRIAK INVITATIONAL
The meet includes five races with the men holding a race for Division I schools and another for both DII and DIII entrants. On the women's side, there is a separate race for each of the three divisions. In Division I, the men are one of 30 teams entered with 10 of those teams, including No. 2 Wisconsin and No. 4 Oregon, set to compete. For the women, 12 of the 27 teams are ranked, including No. 6 Providence, No. 7 Wake Forest and No. 9 Columbia.

IN THE TOP 30 RANKINGS
The women's FinishLynx national rankings were released Sept. 3 with the Sun Devils entering the preseason poll at No. 19. The men's MONDO poll (Sept. 7) saw ASU receive votes to place them 38th in order. The men also are ranked No. 5 in the west region.

FIRST TIME IN FIRST
With Amy Hastings winning the women's race at the Dave Murray Invitational last weekend marked the first time since the 2000 season that a Sun Devil woman captured first place in a race. Lisa Aguilera was the last to do so as she won the NCAA West Region race to help ASU to runner-up honors in Fresno before a school-record sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships two weeks later. If another woman wins a race this year, it will mark the first time with two victories in one year since 2000 when Brianna Torres captured the UC Irvine Invitational to open the season one week prior to the Griak meet.

GAINING EXPERIENCE
The Dave Murray Invitational saw 24 women compete in a 4,300m race with all 12 of the women on the Arizona State roster competing. The men, with a roster of 21 competitors, had 18 of its members racing last weekend. Several members competed as unattached runners in the meet.

FRESHMEN JUMP RIGHT IN
Three women and five men competed in their first collegiate cross country meet last weekend with two finishing strongly. Jessica Crate for the women and Kal Clark for the men, had the meet been scored, would have earned points for their respective teams. Crate finished third on the team and third overall in the meet at 15:13.40 while Clark placed ninth overall and fifth on the team at 20:06.20.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE
After a successful rookie campaign for the Sun Devils last year, Amy Hastings competed in the USATF Junior Cross Country Championships in Houston and finished third in the race. For her efforts, Hastings earned a spot on the USA's World Junior Cross Country Championships team that competed in Switzerland. In the world race, Hastings finished 20th overall, was the top American finisher and helped the team to fifth place in the world.

LAST TIME OUT
The Sun Devils dominated the Dave Murray Invitational in Tucson with the women capturing the Top 5 finishes and the men securing second through fifth in their race. The meet was not scored.

Amy Hastings led the charge by winning the 4,300m race in 15:02.83 with Anna Masinelli, Jessica Crate, Desiree Davila and Amanda Lyon rounding out the Top 5. On the men's side, Aaron Aguayo placed second with teammates Juan Reyes, J.J. Duke and Roger Cahill securing third through fifth for ASU.

NEXT TIME OUT ...
It will be two weeks until the Sun Devils return to action when they play host to the Arizona State Invitational Oct. 10 at Kiwanis Park in Tempe. The women open the racing with a 5K at 4:45 p.m. and the men follow with an 8K at 5:15 p.m.
