TEMPE, Ariz. -- After his stellar performance in which he struck out 13 of the 16 batters he faced against Southern Utah, Arizona State left-handed pitcher Jon Switzer earned national attention by sweeping the player of the week awards. Monday he was named the Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week and today was honored as the inaugural National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Pitcher of the Week.

In his second start of the 2001 season Switzer needed just 69 pitches and allowed only one hit in five innings while racking up a career-high 13 strikeouts. He recorded his first win of 2001 as the Sun Devils went on to beat the Thunderbirds 11-3. The ASU pitching staff combined for 21 strikeouts that game, marking the second most in single-game school history.

He was untouchable as he struck out eight consecutive batters from the first through third innings. That feat ranks second in school history and the most since ASU All-American Eddie Bane fanned eight in a row when he pitched ASU's only perfect game against Cal. St. Northridge in 1973. Switzer was one off the school record of nine consecutive strikeouts set in 1973 by Jim Otten vs. BYU.

The junior preseason All-American was 11-3 with a 3.89 ERA during his sophomore season. Switzer was also a member of the Team USA National team that played throughout the States and Europe this past summer.
