The Sun Devils overwhelmed Northern Arizona from the opening kickoff, forcing three turnovers and running for five touchdowns as ASU rolled up 554 yards of offense while scoring its most points since 2005.

Kelly, ASU’s fourth quarterback in as many years, threw for 247 yards and a touchdown, while linebacker Brandon Magee, back after missing last season with an injury, returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown.

Tight end Chris Coyle matched a school record for tight ends with 10 catches, totaling 131 yards and two scores, and freshman linebacker Carlos Mendoza had two interceptions for Arizona State, which was without linebacker Brandon Magee because of a concussion.

The Sun Devils scored touchdowns on four of their six first-half possessions as ASU completed its first 14 passes, 10 by Kelly and four by Michael Eubank.

GAME 3

Missouri . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 24

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Despite a spirited comeback attempt, the Sun Devils dropped their first contest of the season, falling 24-20 to Missouri in Columbia, Mo., on Sept. 15.

ASU took advantage of three missed field goals by the Tigers to make a game out of things despite being down 17 entering the fourth quarter. Running back Marion Grice had two rushing touchdowns in the final frame to help bring ASU within four with 11:10 left in the game.

The Sun Devils had seven chances from inside the red zone in the final six minutes, but failed to convert the would-be game-winning touchdown.

GAME 4

Arizona State. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 37

Utah . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7

TEMPE, Ariz. – Quarterback Taylor Kelly threw for a career-high 326 yards and three touchdowns and ASU bounced back from its first loss under new coach Todd Graham with a 37-7 rout over Utah on Sept. 22.

Running back Cameron Marshall scored two touchdowns and Arizona State rolled up 512 total yards against one of the nation’s best defenses to win its ninth straight over the Utes.

The Utah offense could not shake the aggressive Devil defense, which collected 10 tackles-for-loss, including four sacks, and caused three turnovers. Linebacker Brandon Magee led the team with 10 tackles and recovered a fumble.
