TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State women's cross country is ranked in the preseason poll for the first time in school history, a year after the Sun Devils advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time. Fourth-year head coach Walt Drenth's program is slated 16th in the year's first FinishLynx rankings, third-best among Pac-10 schools.

ASU loses the services of Priscilla Hein, ASU's first-ever female All-American in cross country, to graduation but returns six of the other seven competitors at last year's NCAA Championships. In addition, junior Mary Duerbeck, ASU's best runner in 1997, returns to the squad after missing last year due to injury.
