Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. - Top ranked Arizona State scored seven runs in the first inning and never looked back, shutting out #7 Oregon State 11-0 to close out a weekend sweep at the DeMarini Invitational. Brett Wallace homered on the first pitch he saw to lead off the bottom of the first, his third straight at bat with a home run, and Seth Blair picked up his first career victory in front 3,710 fans at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.

Brett Wallace set the tone for the afternoon early, sending a shot to left field off OSU starter Greg Peavey. It was Wallace's third homer in two days. Things didn't improve much for Peavey after that, as he allowed seven total runs, four earned, in just one third of an inning. Jason Kipnis continued his hot start to the year, singling up the middle to score Petey Paramore and make it 2-0. Then Marcel Champagnie ripped a bases loaded double to left to drive home three and make it 5-0. An error moved Champagnie to third, then a balk brought him home to make it 6-0. Raoul Torrez then doubled down the left field line to score Matt Newman and give the Devils the 7-0 lead.

Ike Davis doubled home a run in the third to make it 8-0, then Kiel Roling scored two more with his double to right field. ASU would add one more in the fourth on a Matt Newman RBI single.

That was more than enough for freshman righty Seth Blair who, pitching on a pitch count, lasted four innings and allowed only three hits. Jason Franzblau and Tommy Rafferty each threw two scoreless innings and Jason Jarvis pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the win and a perfect weekend.

Brett Wallace went 2-5, while Marcel Champagnie knocked in three runs. Roling added two RBI of his own.

The Devils finished the weekend allowing only six runs in three games, while scoring 36. Brett Wallace finished the weekend 5-12 (.417) with three homers and nine RBI. Jason Kipnis and Ike Davis each knocked in five runs over the weekend as well.

Arizona State will play in the 6th Annual Coca-Cola Classic next weekend, hosting Michigan Thursday night in Tempe before heading to Surprise to face Hawai'i on Friday and Michigan again on Saturday. They will close out the weekend by hosting Portland at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark on Sunday.
