Eric Boateng (men's basketball/Great Britain)
In his senior year, he arguably was one of the most improved players in the nation. And now he is an Olympian.
Sun Devil Eric Boateng (B.A., Global Studies, 2009) has earned a spot on the 12-man Great Britain men's basketball team for the 2012 London Olympics, his hometown. It will be only the second appearance for England hoops in the Olympics, joining 1948, the last time London hosted the Games. The team is coached by Houston Rockets assistant Chris Finch.
Boateng, 26, will backup Robert Archibald in the post. Boateng plays professionally for the Peristeri team in Greece. The Denver Nuggets had Boateng in training camp in 2010, and he played for the Austin Toros of the NBA D-League before signing with Peristeri in November.
Three Sun Devil men's basketball players have been selected to Olympic team rosters. Joe Caldwell played for the 1964 U.S. team that captured gold in Tokyo, while Alton Lister made the 1980 team which boycotted the games in Moscow. Shawn Redhage, who helped lead the Sun Devils to the 2003 NCAA Tournament, earned a spot on the Australian team in 2008 when it competed in Bejing. James Harden is a finalist for the USA squad that begins training this weekend in Las Vegas.
An outstanding student-athlete with a 3.05 grade point average, Eric was one of the nation's most improved players in 2009-10.
After scoring 57 points in junior season (2008-09), he averaged 8.8 points and 7.2 boards and shot a Pac-10 best 66.5 percent (117-of-176) from the field in his senior season (2009-10) including a league-best .660 (68-of-103) in Pac-10 games.
When you add his Duke and Arizona State records, he played on teams that compiled a 100-38 (.725) record in his four seasons.
His ASU record .665 field goal percentage in 2009-10 matched Bill Walton for eighth on the Pac-10 single-season list and was the best by a Pac-10 hooper since Jelani McCoy of UCLA set the Pac-10 record by shooting .756 in 1996-97.
Eric's .644 career field goal clip (197-of-306) also is an ASU record, and he posted 15 games of double-digit points, including 12 in his senior season.

Had a career-best 24 points at Stanford on Feb. 25 when he matched the Pac-10 record for field goal percentage in a single game, as he was 11-of-11 from the field, the only player in the NCAA to go perfect in more than 10 field goal attempts in a game on the year. In his final 13 games he shot 69.8 percent from the floor (60-of-86) and averaged 11.2 points and 8.8 boards.
