USA Swimming Open Water Results

CASTAIC LAKE, Calif.--Competing in back-to-back events at the 2013 USA Swimming Open Water National Championships, junior Tristin Baxter earned a spot on the US Opener Water National Team for the second-straight year.

Baxter finished sixth in the women's 10k race with a time of 2:02:17.811 on Friday in a tight race where less than three seconds separating the top-six athletes. Swimming a 10k is the equivalent to swimming almost 6.3 miles while you are racing your competitors to the finish line.

On Sunday, Baxter returned to compete in the women's 5k race where she improved to a fifth-pace finish with a time of 1:00:40.27. According to USA Swimming, the top-six athletes in each race qualify for the US National Open Water Swimming team.

"She broke off the lead pretty quickly," said head coach Dorsey Tierney-Walker. "Tristin is establishing herself as one of the best open water swimmers in the country, if not the world."

As the top distance swimmer for Arizona State, Baxter currently holds the school record in both the 1000 and 1650 free. She also earned All-America honors in 2012 with her eighth place finish in the 1650 at the NCAA Championships.

Open water swimming takes place in large, outdoor bodies of waters such as lakes and oceans and was recently added as an Olympic event in 2008. After this season's NCAA Championships Baxter competed in Cozumel World Cup open water 10k, where the junior swam in the Caribbean Sea along side various sea life including tropical fish and stingrays.

Baxter, a marketing major in the W.P. Carey School of Business, also interns in the Sun Devil media relations office where she designed the 2012-13 swimming and diving team poster, updated top times during the season, and provided live update of Sun Devil Swimming on the road.
