Swimming, Diving Excel on Second Day of Invitational Competition

LAS VEGAS, Nev./AUSTIN, Tex.—Through two days of racing, the Arizona State women’s swimming team sits in third place right behind UCLA at the UNLV Invitational, while the men’s team is in a close fourth place to UC Santa Barbara.

Senior Tory Houston finished second in the women’s 100 breast in an NCAA B-cut time of 1:02:17, while senior Alex Coci also notched a second place in the men’s 100 fly with an NCAA B-cut time of 47.92. Coci recorded a season-best 47.80 in the event in the preliminaries and entered the finals as the top seed. 

Freshman Kat Simonovic also had a successful day for the Sun Devils, scoring 28 points for the women’s team individually with top-10 finishes in the 100 fly and 200 free. Simonovic also helped the ASU A relay to a third-place finish with a time of 7:20.67.

On the men’s side three Sun Devils finished in the top-10 in the men’s 100 back. Freshman Richard Bohus and senior Alex Coci finished three, four for the Sun Devils, while freshman Barkley Perry took seventh. Senior David Adalsteinsson finished 11th to give ASU 49 points, on the whole, in the event. 

In Austin at the Texas Diving Invitational, sophomore Morgan Weller finished third in the women’s 1-meter springboard finals scoring a total of 306.45, 20 points behind first-place Meghan Houston of Texas. Junior Hailey Casper finished eighth with a score of 283.80.

In a competitive match-up on men’s 3-meter springboard finals, senior Olympian Riley McCormick scored a total of 431.95 in the event to finish in second place. A total of 40 points separated the top-six divers in the finals.

The final rounds of the UNLV and Texas Invitational concludes tomorrow.
