Swimming, Diving Finish Strong on Final Day of Invitational Competition

LAS VEGAS, Nev./AUSTIN, Texas -- The Arizona State women's and men's swimming and diving team finished the weekend strong at the UNLV Invitational and the Texas Diving Invitational, respectively. The women's team surged past UCLA to take second behind California and the men's team finished a close fourth behind Wyoming.

The women’s team dominated the 200 back with California. The Sun Devils had three swimmers finish in the top-10 with Jennifer Morgan, Melanie Busch and Juanita Baretto finishing fifth, seventh and eighth respectively. Miranda Tornatore would finish 11th to give the Sun Devils a total of 43 points for the event. Morgan would swimming the 200 back in an NCAA B-cut time of 1:58.21.

On the men’s side of the 200 back, four Sun Devils would also put points on the board. Freshman Barkely Perry swam an NCAA B-cut time 1:45.74 to finish fourth and score 15 points. David Adalsteinsson, Kyle Sockwell and Ryan Glander each finish ninth, 10th and 13th to bring the total to 34 points for the event. In the 200 fly, Alex Coci notched an NCAA B-Cut time touching in at 1:46.42 in the finals. Coci recorded a faster time of 1:46.36 in the prelims, which will be used as his lowest time for NCAA consideration.

Freshman distance swimmer Anna Olasz finished third overall in the women’s 1650 free with a time of 16:50.29, just 20 seconds off the NCAA B-cut time. Tory Houston also finished third in the 200 breast to add another 16 points to the Sun Devil women’s total. Houston finished with an NCAA B-standard time, swimming her fastest round in the prelim with a time of 2:13.91 Senior Tristin Baxter, known as a distance swimmer, took third place in the 200 fly, Saturday, with a time of 1:59.79.

In diving, Sydney Czaus, who has been focusing on platform competition this season, finished in sixth place on the women’s 10-meter platform with a score of 243.70. Czaus’ score was just three points off the next competitor.
