FEDERAL WAY, Wash.—Arizona State senior diver Riley McCormick took home some hardware Thursday night at the Pac-12 Championships, upsetting reigning champion Kristian Ipsen of Stanford for the men’s 3-meter springboard title. McCormick, a platform diving specialist, defeated Ipsen by a margin of a less than three points for a total score of 439.70 on the springboard event.

This marks McCormick’s third Pac-12 diving title and first title on springboard. McCormick had previously won the 2010 and 2011 Pac-12 platform titles before grey shirting for the 2012 London Olympics for Canada.

A two-time Canadian Olympian, McCormick joins the ranks of well decorated Sun Devil divers under head coach Mark Bradshaw. In his first two years at Arizona State, McCormick was named Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year and earned back-to-back Pac-12 Diver of the Year honors. In London, McCormick qualified for the Olympic finals on platform where he finished 11th in the world.

For the women, senior distance specialist Tristin Baxter finished in fifth place in the 500 free. Baxter, the ASU record holder in the event, swam the race in an NCAA B cut time of 4:41.95 and earned 25 points for the Sun Devils. US Olympian and California’s Missy Franklin would take first in the event for the Golden Bears.

In the 200 free relay, the ASU A relay of Melanie Busch, Ingibjorg Jonsdottir, Kat Simonovic, and Juanita Barreto finished in fifth place for the Sun Devils with a time of 1:31.05. The relay earned a total of 50 points for ASU.
