New Sun Devil Twitter Avatar...Greg Ruegamer

    | No TrackBacks
Time to update the avatar on my personal account with another Sun Devil.

This one is in honor of the guys like Brock, Omar, GRob and others who will start their NFL careers real soon. If they are looking for a Sun Devil role model, it would be easy to think about TSizzle and Jake Plummer, but there is one guy who realistically might be the best example of how to carve out  a NFL career.

Grey was a third-round pick in the 1999 NFL Draft by Miami after earning second-team All-American in 1998 and third-team honors in 1997. He was on that magical 1996 team that went 11-0 in the regular season. But when the top honors stopped and it was time to cash a paycheck, he knew what to do and went to work.

His NFL career included stops in Miami, Pittsburgh, New England, Green Bay, New York and Seattle. He played in 124 games. He was rarely a starter, but was always a dependable reserve. He shut his mouth, didn't complain and went to work for a decade. As the back-up center, he had Dan Marino, Tom Brady Brett Favre and Eli Manning all slap his backside. Of course, the best part of his career is he was on the winning side of two of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history when the Patriots beat the Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI and with the Giants when they upset the Giants in Super Bowl XLII. He is a great person to talk to about what it takes to win a Super Bowl.

So as more players begin the NFL dream, Grey has now started the next step as he is coaching at Chaparral High School. It isn't all about starting or making the Pro Bowl. Sometimes it is just about making a solid living and being coachable, dependable and efficient. Be the first one to the practice facility and study your playbook. Stay out of trouble. Be ready if you are the next man up.

Ruegie did that for a decade.

New Twitter Avatar This Week...Paul Casey

    | No TrackBacks
Going with a Paul Casey avatar on my twitter page this week. Why? It is Pac-12 Golf Championship week, an event that at one time could have been called the PAulCasey-10 Championship.

No one golfer can match Paul's three straight Pac-10 titles from 1998-2000, and at the time ASU was finishing off a streak of six straight league titles, unheard of in college golf. How good was ASU at that time? No one can come close to six straight league titles. And in the 2000 championships, ASU shot 56-under. The second-place team was Oregon State...at 19-under.

Casey ended his career with six championships, tied for third on the ASU wins list as he passed 1993 NCAA Champion Todd Demsey, who had five. Casey ends his career tied with Charlie Gibson, who won six titles from 1972-75, while four-time All-American Billy Mayfair won eight titles from 1985-88. Phil Mickelson leads the list with an amazing 16 wins from 1989-92.

He was inducted into the Sun Devil Hall of Fame in 2010, but has not been able to be on campus to be properly honored because of commitments. So when the time comes, we can't wait to see Paul back on campus.

Final note on Paul? His recruiting trip to Tempe was a special one. He was one of the people who stormed the field after the Sun Devils beat Nebraska in 1996.

By the way, the second-place finisher in the 2000 Pac-10 Championships held in Tempe might be a familiar name to Sun Devils. Tim Mickelson.
