    The Sun Devils

Hey Percy, don't forget our guy Jon Gilling...

    | No TrackBacks
Saw a blog from Seattle Times hoops writer Percy Allen, who covers the Pac-12 as well as anyone not named Doug Haller. In his midseason awards blog, he listed his five-man All-Freshman team and it was solid, but one person needs to be considered in for that group when you look at the Pac-12 only statistics.

While Washington's Tony Wroten is a clear winner for the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year at this point, another five seem to be in the race as those that should make up the remainder of the five-man team. Take a look at where Sun Devil Jon Gilling stands up to the other four in Pac-12 only statistics when compared to Spencer Dinwiddie (Colorado), DaVonte Lacy (Washington State), Nick Johnson (Arizona) and Chasson Randle (Stanford).

In Pac-12 stats, Gilling has averaged more minutes than any of the other four, is shooting better than three of them and has the best three-point percentage (.429) despite attempting the most among all freshmen. The 6-7 Gilling also is the leader in assists among the other four (29), a full nine ahead of Randle, and just one dime behind the point guard Wroten.

Much more Pac-12 hoops to be played, but Pitchfork Posts decided that Gilling's slow start probably needs to be forgotten. He wasn't able to attend summer school, so he fell behind on everything early. Think of it this way....in his first eight games he averaged 8.8 MINUTES. In his past 12 he has averaged 8.8 POINTS.

Gilling High On Pac-12 Assists List With A Bunch Of Guards...

    | No TrackBacks
There is no question that Sun Devil freshman Jonathan Gilling has impressed a few folks with his overall game and passing ability, especially in Pac-12 play. He posted a season-high seven dimes vs. Washington State on Saturday, and also had six at Arizona (Dec. 31) and five vs. Oregon (Jan. 12). He is averaging 3.2 assists per game through nine Pac-12 games, which is tied for 10th in the  league. Taking a look at the leaders and one thing stands out...everyone on the list is basically a point guard but Jon. And he is second among freshman to Washington's Tony Wroten.

    Reggie Moore, WSU (5.7)
    Lazeric Jones, UCLA (5.7)
    Jorge Gutierrez, CAL (5.4)
    Justin Cobbs, CAL (5.0)
    Jerime Andereson, UCLA (4.4)
    Abdul Gaddy, UW (4.1)
    Chris Colvin, ASU (3.6)
    Aaron Bright, STAN (3.4)
    Tony Wroten, UW (3.3)
    Jon Gilling, ASU (3.2)
    Jared Cunningham, OSU (3.2)

    More Gilling notes...

--Has 36 assists and just 15 turnovers in the past 11 games and is averaging nine points per game in that span.

--Played a career-high 39 minutes vs. Washington Thursday he played 38 vs. Washington State.

--Is averaging 32.7 minutes per game in Pac-12 play. That currently ranks fifth in Sun Devil history, behind only James Harden (35.9) and Ty Abbott(34.8) in 2007-08, Byron Scott's 34.2 in 1979-80 and Ike Diogu's 33.3 in 2002-03. Derek Glasser (32.2 in 2006-07) is currently behind Gilling.

With the Pac-12 and the Big 10 making some noise today regarding non-conference football scheduling, figured it might be time to revisit Arizona State's future non-conference schedules. As we all know, these are tentative and a variety of things could change the course, but as of December of 2011 here is what we have...

    ASU FUTURE NON-CONFERENCE FOOTBALL SCHEDULE
    2012-NAU, Illinois, @Missouri
2013-Sacramento State, Wisconsin, Notre Dame (Dallas)
2014-Weber State, @New Mexico, Notre Dame
    2015-New Mexico, @LSU, Cal Poly
    2016-NAU, LSU, @UTSA
2017-New Mexico State, San Diego State, @Notre Dame

The other night it was noted that Keala King posted 16 points, 10 boards and had six assists, so he almost messed around and got a triple-double. And it was also noted that that would be the first in Sun Devil history. Curtis Millage came the closest most recently and on the biggest stage, falling one assist short in the NCAA Tournament win in 2003 over Memphis. Had Millage been credited with one more assist, he would have joined a list of players to notch a triple-double at the time that included Oscar Robertson, Magic Johnson, Gary Grant, Shaqille O'Neal, David Cain (St. John's) and Andre Miller. It didn't happen, and the next week Dwyane Wade did it. Here is a look at Sun Devils who have nearly notched a triple double:

    ASU NEAR TRIPLE DOUBLES

Curtis Millage vs. Memphis (NCAA Tournament at Oklahoma City)/March 20, 2003 (17 points, 11 rebounds, 9 assists)

    Eddie House vs. California/March 9, 2000 (21 points, 8 boards, 8 assists)

    Mark Becker vs. UCLA/Jan. 21, 1988 (19 points, 10 assists, 9 rebounds)

    Byron Scott vs. TCU/March 21, 1983 (33 points, 10 assists, 9 rebounds)

Sun Devils in the NFL 2011-2012

Former Sun Devil standout receiver Kyle Williams had a great game in the San Francisco 49ers 23-7 roll of the Arizona Cardinals. Williams had five catches for 54 yards and a touchdown on the day. See Williams' 8-yard TD catch here (highlight courtesy of NFL.com).

Williams is in his second season with the 49ers after being drafted in the seventh round to San Francisco. He has been active as a wide receiver as well as kick and punt returner.

During his career at Arizona State, Williams played in 41 games making 15 starts. He totaled 109 receptions for 1,626 yards and 18 touchdowns. Over his career he also had 74 punt returns for 768 yards and 31 kickoff returns for 709 yards. He led the Sun Devils his 2009 senior season with 57 receptions for 815 yards and eight touchdowns. He had four 100+ yard games that year as well.

We look forward to seeing what the rest of the season brings Kyle and his 9-1 San Francisco 49ers. As always, go Devils!
The Sun Devil men's hoops team last played on Nov. 18 and now plays on Nov. 24 vs. Fairfield in the Old Spice Classic on Thanksgiving (ESPN2), which means it is time to update that note about Herb Sendek and his staff having five days to prepare.

ASU is 14-5 (.737) in the past four years when Coach Sendek has at least five full days to prepare for a game. Some of the wins are predictable and are of the "well, you should beat them" variety but a closer looks reveals some of ASU's biggest and most notable wins have taken place on the five days rest.

In 2007-08, ASU posted its largest win over a ranked team in school history after a six-day break with a 22-point win over No. 17 Xavier. A few weeks later, playing in its first game as ranked team in 13 seasons and facing a solid crowd in Berkeley, ASU topped Cal 99-90 in overtime, and then later in the year ASU fell behind early but won its first game in Tucson in more than a decade.

In 2008-09, ASU went 5-1 with five full days between games and that included wins over 10-1 BYU led by Jimmer Fredette, a hot Arizona team in Tempe with Chase Budinger and Jordan Hill and ASU's first NCAA Tournament win since 2003 over Temple.

In 2009-10 ASU beat NCAA-bound teams San Diego State and No. 24 Washington when taking advantage of a long layoff and also won its third straight in Tucson.

What time will the ASU/UA football game be on Nov. 19?

    | No TrackBacks

Many Sun Devils have asked us what time the Territorial Cup kickoff will be on Nov. 19. Here is a cheat sheet to help...

There are two TV windows that Saturday, as ABC has a 1:30 MT kick and Versus has a 5:30 MT kick. Note we are in the real Mountain Time at that time of year, an hour ahead of the west coast. We are telling you that because the Pac-12 office might list some things as Pacific Time only or Versus/ABC might list ET. So remember, two hours behind the east and one hour in front of the west on Nov. 19.

Note that USC at Oregon will kick at 6 p.m. MT on ABC. That game was a summer selection, like ASU's Missouri and USC games. It won't change.

So now that we have that out of the way, the games to pick from are UA at ASU, CU at UCLA, Cal at Stanford, Washington at Oregon State and Utah at Washington State.

So now that you have that, let's assume that Stanford with its high ranking and Andrew Luck grab the ABC slot at 1:30. Who gets the 5:30 slot?

The Sun Devils could take a huge step towards getting that with a win Saturday. Beat UCLA and the CU at UCLA game falls off the TV map. Utah at Washington State probably isn't getting picked due to both teams being around .500. That leaves Washington at Oregon State as the main competition.

If Oregon beats UW and ASU beats UCLA, a 5:30 kick on Versus is the likely scenario. If UW beats Oregon, then it is a toss-up.

If UA/ASU isn''t picked for one of the two slots Fox Sports Arizona and Pac-12/FSN would then try and get a time to broadcast that would be in agreement with all concerned, keeping in mind such things as not crossing over other games too much, other games on FOX Sports Arizona that day, etc.

Hope that helps the Sun Devil cause.

As we hit the bye and basically the midpoint of the football season, it is probably worth noting that only three true freshmen have played this year. And that is a good thing for the future of the program...

In his second and third seasons at ASU, Coach Erickson played 18 true freshmen. In his last two seasons, that number is at just six as depth in the program has improved. As a comparison, Colorado is having to play a dozen true freshmen this year while four other Pac-12 schools are playing 10 true freshmen (Arizona, Cal, Oregon State and Washington State).

ASU has been the recipient of some great play from two true freshmen in the past two seasons, as both Junior Onyeali (2010) and Vontaze Burfict (2009) were Pac-10 Defensive Freshmen of the Year.

But having said that, look at the list of 2008 players and how nice would it be to have some of those guys back next year? That is what is able to happen now as depth has improved in the upper classes.
